Groom Area Residents
• Take Top Honors At
75th Tri-State Fair
The 75th Tri-State Fair
in Amarillo opened last
weekend and several
Groom area residents
have already come home
with honors.
Cody Britten had a
fabulous day at the fair.
He earned two Best in
. Class winners and a
" Champion A.O.B. with
his Chiannina heifers.
Cody is a senior F.F.A.
member at Groom High
School. He is the son
of Mr. Lynn Britten.
Groom FFA also was
well represented in the
ag mechanics competition.
Last year’s classes built a
BBQ cooker for this
competition. It is
designed to look like an
a old fashioned 6-shooter.
It placed 3rd in the
competition.
Jessica McMahan will
be showing her steer
later in the week.
Jerry, Kelly and Calvin
Schaffer, of Schaffer
Farms, in the Groom-
Pampa area, earned top
honors in the Agronomy
competition at the fair.
Jerry Schaffer earned
the title of Premier
breeder in Agronomy,
"earning top prizes in ear
corn, seed corn, white
grain sorghum, red grain
sorghum, soybeans and
wheat.
In the Garden and
Vegetable show Schaffer
Farms earned 2nd place
in Jalapeno peppers;. 2nd
place in Serrano peppers;
1st place chili peppers;
1st place banana yellow
peppers; 5th place
habenaro peppers; 3rd
place cherry peppers; 4th
place in snap beans, 4th
place in small tomatoes;
3rd place in Roma
tomatoes; 3rd place in
gourds; 5th place in
mini-pumpkins; 1st place
in eggplant; 4th place in
summer squash; 3rd place
in other summer squash;
1st and 3rd place in
sweet pumpkins, 2nd
place in medium field
pumpkins; and 3rd place
in other melons. The
Schaffers placed 4th in
the Garden Basket
competi tion.
Tim Case and his
mom, Karen Case, also
competed in the Garden
& Vegetable show and
did very well.
Tim placed 4th in
Jalapeno peppers, 4th in
banana yellow peppers,
3rd in ornamental
peppers; 3rd in num
pumpkins; and 4th in Big

Brumley Releases First Album
Rick Brumley, a 1975
Groom High School
graduate and the son of
Mr. and Mrs. Johnny
Brumley, recently
released his first music
album. "The Horseman’s
Prayer", named for just
one of his original songs
on the release, is
available on compact disk
or cassette tape.
Rick performs cowboy
poetry, sings ballads and
other county and western
music. Some of his
most recent performances
include the National
Cowboy Symposium held
in Lubbock, which was
held September 11-13, a
performance for the
Camp Alphie Kids near
Amarillo and The Nara
Visa Cowboy Gathering
in Logan, New Mexico.
He is scheduled to
perform at the WRCA
World Championship
Rick Brumley recently released "The Horseman's Ranch Rodeo November
Prayer", a collection of western songs. 12-14 and the American

was inspired by friends,
Keith Calhoun and Craig
Cameron, both who he
credits for "being dear
friends and good
horsemen."
"Ridin’ Free" was co-
written by his wife,
Regina.
"A cowboy friend of
mine named Davis Ross
gave me the idea for this
song after listening to his
story in the cook house
of the Pitchfork Ranch
one night. His story is
probably true of many a
good puncher,” he stated.
"My Hands on the
Reins" is the third
original song.

Groom High School’s
Homecoming Celebration
Homecoming is just a
week away. Already
Groom ISD’s student
body is making
preparations for the
event. Students recently
chose their Homecoming
Queen candidates. They
are Seniors Karen Conrad
and Jessica Stapp, and
Juniors Jessica Kepley,
Carrie Davis and Jodi
will be charged for this
event.
On Tuesday, students
will celebrate T-shirt
signing, and hat and
shades day. The bonfire/
pep rally will begin at
7:30 on the practice field.
Wednesday is Hippie
day. Students will flash
back to the 60’s! The
little kids pep rally will
be held at 2:30 in the
