UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
EUGENE A. DE MAY, OF RICHMOND, TEXAS.
CAR-COUPLING.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 364,494, dated June 7, 1887.
Application filed March 17, 1887. Serial No. 231,2S1. (No model.)To all whom it 771ay concern:
Be it known that I, EUGENE A. DE MAY, of
Richmond, in the county of Fort Bend and
State of Texas, have invented a new and Im-
3 proved Car-Coupling, of which the following
is a specification, reference being had to the
annexed drawings, forming a part thereof, in
which-
Figure 1 is a perspective view showing the
to application of my improved car-coupling to a
car, and Fig. 2 is a horizontal section taken on
line x x in Fig. 1.
Similar letters of reference indicate corre-
sponding parts in both views.
I The object of my invention is to provide a
simple and effective device for automatically
coupling cars of varying heights, and also to
provide devices for uncoupling the cars with-
out the necessity of going between them.
10 My invention consists in a spring pressed
hook attached to or formed upon a rock-shaft
extending to the top of the car, and provided
with a hand-wheel, by which it may be turned.
It also consists in the combination, with the
25 hook,of a rod connected thereto and extending
to the side of the car, for uncoupling the car
from the ground.
In the draw-bar A, carried by the car A', and
in the arm B, projecting from the top of the
30 car, isjournaled a rock-shaft, C, carrying at its
lower end a hook, D, having a rounded notch,
a,andaroundednib,b. Surroundingtheshaft
C is a spiral-spring, E, which rests upon the
draw-bar A and presses upward against a nut,
35 F, on the shaft C. The upper end of the shaft
C is provided with a hand-wheel, G, by means
of which it may be turned from the top of the
car.
The extremity of the hook D is beveled from
40 the top downward, to facilitate its engagement
with a similar hook carried by a higher car.
An ear, c, projects from the back of the hook
D, which is pivoted to the end of a rod, d, ex-
tending through a guide, e, at the end of thecar, near the side thereof, and provided with a 45
handle, f, and upon the rod d, between the
guide e and hook D, is placed aspring, g, which
tends to push the hook forward.
The hooks D of two adjoining cars engage
eachother, asshownin Fig. 2. Whenthehook 50
of one car is to be brought into engagement
with a hook which is carried lower by the ad-
jacent car, the rock-shaft C will be pushed
downward against the pressure of the spring
E. The notch a and nib b of the hook are of 55
such form as to be worn uniformly and in the
same shape by use.
When it is desired to uncouple the cars from
the top of the cars, the hooks D are thrown
back by turning the hand-wheel G, and when 6o
it is desired to uncouple the cars from the
ground the hooks D are drawn backward by
means of the rod d.
It is obvious that my improved coupler can
be applied to the ordinary draw-bar, thereby 65
saving the expense and delay of making and
fitting a new draw-bar.
Having thus fully described my invention,
I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters
Patent- 70
1. In a car-coupling, the combination of the
shaft C, provided with the nut F and carrying
the hook D, the spring E, resting upon the
draw-bar A and pressing against the under
surface of the nut F, and the spring actuated 75
rod d, substantially as described.
2. In a car-coupling, the combination of the
shaft C, the hook D, carried thereby, and pro-
vided with a beveled end, the spring E, the
nut F, the hand-wheel G, the rod d, the guide 80
e, and the spring g, placed on the rod between
the guide e and hook D, substantially as de-
scribed.
