Farmers over the district con-
tinue seeding of spring? pa.stur s.
Pastures seeded now may not
come up until sufficient rainf II
is present. It will be better t >
dry seed the jrrs.ss now, -o .
will be ready t«> i one up a
soon as moistun i.* available
Seedbeds should be* fertilised an !
prepared now whether you plan
to apply the seed uefore r ceiv
ing moisture or not. Most pas
ture grasses require a firm s-H
bed for best results. A prepared
seedbed which has received sum
rain before seeding, is usually i
good shape for seeding.
Cooperator Robert Alford wh
owns three farms at Rita plans
t« seed 100 acres of Kin# Ra i'-h
Bluestem grass. Robert harvest-
ed seed last year on a 6 acre KK
plot aqd will have enough st-ed
for his future seeding this
spring. The seedbed will be pre-
pared and the recommended
amount of fertilizer and seed ap
plied. Robert will control graz-
ing of livestock on his 100 acres
to allow the gra«s t,, become
well established.
Cooperator Walter Whaley who
owns a farm at Second Creek
plans to seed some King Ranch
Bluestem on a portion ot bottom
land. This land was cleared hi~:
year with a bulldozer. Walt<
had destroyed the brush and
disced the seedbed for planting
A fence will be constructed a
round the bluestem area to con-
tiol grazing until sufficient
growth is obtained.
Cooperator Leroy Buffingt<>
has made plans to seed 15 acres
of Bermuda grass on the M--
A. B. Dean farm at Chriesma*
Controlled and rotation of graz
ing will lie practiced on this an.
The recommended fertilizer ami
seed will be applied at time of
seeding.
Several farmers are subsoiling
pasture land or deep plowing.
This will be to an advantage to
allow more rainfall to be absorb-
ed into the soil temporarily. Af
ter several rains tie- subsoil fur
roughs will sea! off and the prac-
tice will need to be redone. Sub
soiling or deep plowing will el
low the grass root system to u'"
deeper into the soil, but will be
for a temporary period. Th<
i-st method to obtain ail these
advantages on a peimanent basis
is to seed a permanent deep root
ed grass, such as King Ranch
Bluestem. Once you have a pei-
manent grass well establish d
the soil will be in good condition.
More water will go into the soil
ami the root system will lie deep
to supply food and moisture for
the grass during a dry season.
Once the permanent grass hag
conditioned the soil it will stay
in condition and improve, as |r,nt;
as the grass remains on the la> (|.
The following farmers have re-
cently had farm ponds const tuet
ed on their farms: H, K. Fleti h >
and Charlie Blaha of East Som.
erville, C. O. Pick of East J,;
Wayne Kruger of Caldwell, an.j
Phil Alford, Sr., of Caldwell.
The above farmers were assi- .
ed by local Soil Conservad n
Service personnel in estaldi.-hi ¡;
the above practices.
