Treasured reminder of yesteryear is the Bastion, Nanaimo, Van-
couver Island
The Bastion was built by employees of the Hudson's Bay Company
whose proud boast was that they would allow themselves to In-
drawn naked along the huge mor-
tised logs they shaved with their
axes and wager that not a splinter
would enter their body.
The three-storeyed Bastion's
lower compartment served as a
jail, the centre area as gunroom
housing the six-pound cannonades
that hurtled shot towards attack-
ing Indians, whilst the wives and
children of the few white settlers
were rushed to the sanctuary o(
the uppermost section.
Now on the threshold oí its sec •
ond • century after repeated and
unsuccessful early sieees by *ar-
faring Indians, the much photo-
graphed old Bastion has become a
precious milestone m the history
of British Columbia The British
Columbia Government Travel Bu-
reau, Victoria, B C , has recently-
issued a new coloured brochure
on this Pacific Playground
tee, composed of the incoming
officers, saw a ne d for standards
to be conformed to by the entire
FFA membership. It was :.he
concensus of this group that these
standards will do much in deve-
loping and improving the FFA
program in Caldwell.
FFA officers for the coming
school year include: Weldun C in-
zel, president and fellow officers
Franklin Sebesta, Weldon Peters,
