Born in Santa Monica, California 1932. Grew up in Hollywood, appeared in several
movies as a child. At nine made his own film. Considers his films to be magical
innovations, being influenced by occultist Aleister Crowley. 1941 filmed "Who Has Been
Rocking My Dream Boat?" and "Tinsel Tree." 1942 filmed "Prisoner of Mars"; 1943 "The
Nest"; 1944 "Escape Episode"; 1947 "Fireworks." Considers his montage oriented
technique to be influenced by Sergei Eisenstein. 1953 filmed "Eaux d'Artifice" in the Villa
D'Este Gardens of Tivoli, Italy. 1954 returned to Los Angeles, filmed "Inauguration of the
Pleasure Dome" inspired by the rituals of Crowley. 1955 went to Cefali, Sicily to restore
the erotic frescoes of Crowley; filmed a documentary for British television, "Thelema
Abbey." 1962 returned to U.S. filming "Scorpio Rising" in Brooklyn for starting of
Aquarian Age. 1964 received a Ford grant. Started "Kustom Kar Kommandos." 1965 went
to London working on "Inauguration" and "Anger Aquarian Arcanum." 1966 worked on
"Lucifer Rising" about the 'holy' war between the Piscean and Aquarian ages. Frequents
New York and San Francisco.
WALLACE BERMAN
Born in Los Angeles, California 1926. 1947 drawing series of the underground jazz and
art milieu. 1949 started making sculptures from the rejected material found at the factory
where he worked refinishing antique furniture. 1955 published, with small handpress, the
first issue of Semina, an album of poems, photographs, and drawings. First to print the
work of William S. Burroughs. 1957 first exhibition at the Ferus Gallery, Los Angeles, but
afterwards produced no public art until 1964, when he started the series of verifax
collages. Exhibited: "Studio Exhibition," Los Angeles, 1965; Robert Fraser Gallery,
London, 1966; L. A. County Museum of Art, 1968; The Jewish Museum, New York, 1968;
"Assemblage in California," University of California, Irvine, 1968. Lives in Topanga
Canyon, California.
LEE BONTECOU
Born in Providence, Rhode Island 1931. Youth spent mostly in Nova Scotia. 1952-55
studied at the Art Students League, New York, under William Zorach and John Hovannes.
1960 started working with stretched canvas relief shapes. One man shows: Gallery G,
New York, 1959; Leo Castelli, New York, 1960, '62. Some exhibitions: "Festival of Two
Worlds," Spoleto, Italy, 1958; "New Forms-New Media," Martha Jackson Gallery, New
York, 1960; "The Art of Assemblage," Museum of Modern Art, New York, 1961; "Art Since
1950," Seattle Worlds Fair, 1962. Presently lives in New York City.145
