INTRODUCTION
A museum can no more exist as an island in time than man can,
struggle as each might to resist disruptive ideas or influences.
Without the one, the other simply isn't, since both specialize
in life and must live a practical fullness to either have or find
meanings beyond mere existence.
If a museum is to function as the Dallas Museum for Contem-
porary Arts is designed to - that is, by concentrating on the
most cleanly-defined artistic expression of our times - it must feed on those artists who provide the sustenance of its being
and that public which cares or can be made aware of spiritual
seeking beyond reality.
. eThat is why "Abstract By Choice" is a natural for an opening
show. By going on record with this particular collection, this
particular museum is staking out its boundaries: it will serve
best those who realize the need of orienting themselves to the
world of art we live in and whatever worlds are in the making.
"Abstract By Choice" almost defines itself as a descriptive title:
the artists it enfolds fill a canvas the way they do because that
way best releases their identities. Believe it or not, it is not a
style that can be dashed off by five-year olds (just put the kiddy
next door to work at it some time). Abstract expression de-
mands artists of great drawing skill first, who very much know
what they are doing to reshape reality for fresh concepts. Ab-
stract painting, like any other type, can hide its quota of frauds
