Census nosedive
questioned here
Canadian Chamber of Com-
merce members Monday night
decided on an independent
block-by-block survey of the
city to check on the accuracy
of a drastic drop in population
indicated by the preliminary
census reoort last week-end.
Official census figures, re-
leased last Friday, showed Ca-
nadian's population to be 2,219
. . . down almost 500 from the
1950 count of 2,700. Census
district director Clyde Cook, in
Amarillo, said the figures had
been re-checked and denied
Johnny Glenn and John
Rogers state champions
any possibility of an error in
tabulation.
Chamber of Commerce mem-
bers doubted the census fig-
ure, indicating a 20 per cent
loss of population, because it
is not reflected in other sta-
tistics concerning the com-
munity. Electric meter connec-
tions, for example, show an
increase from 902 in 1950 to
1,050 today . . . and gas meter
connections as reported by
Public Service Corporation
show an increase from 804 in
