The Curley Owens Home
I would have thought you would be running over me to
buy this home the way I can sell it to you. This is a heap
of home and a bargain price. You will have to see this
home to really appreciate it and we'll guarantee you that
you are saving several thousand dollars over replacement.
Fully carpeted, bath and a half, all kinds of extras you
wouldn't ordinarily cxpect in a home for this kind of
money and you can move right in. You are going to have
to see about this right away or we're going to take it off

Canadian is 'pilot city'
Telephone company changes
long distance bill method
Some telephone customers
in Canadian will be getting a
new type Long Distance state-
ment with their next tele-
phone bill, Joe McDonald,
manager for the Southwest-
ern Bell Telephone Company,
has announced.
McDonald said the new type
bills are the result of a new,
faster, more efficient method
of hilling out-of-town calls,
líe said Canadian was chosen
as one of the pilot cities for
this new service; and that
gradually "electronic billing''
of out-of-town calls will be
introduced in other cities in
Texas where Southwestern
Bell operates.
According to the manager
the new system works like
this: Long Distance operators
will record the information
about each call on a special
card with a magnetic pencil.
• McDonald explained every
Long Distance operator marks
down information about each
out-of-town call she handles.
The place called, the tele-
phone number there, and the
caller's telephone nnmber are
a( present written in a long-
hand code on a special slin of
naper. The call is then timed
hv a snecial clock and for.
warded to a clerk who com-
putes the charges for billing
purposes). Under the electron-
ic billing system this infor-
mation will be recorded in
(he form of "bubbles" or spe-
cial marks instead of the
long hand code now in use.
Since the marks are made
with a magnetic pencil the
"tickets" or slips of paper can
be processed through an IBM
machine which will translate
the marks into billing infor-
mation and then print it on
the bill mailed to the custom-
er.
Because of the immense
training job involved, opera-
tors arc being trained a few
at a time, and not all Canadi-
an operators have finished
this training at present. Some
operators will continue to use
the old method of recording
information on out-of-town
calls.
"As a result of training a
few operators at a time," Mc-
Donald said, "it is possible
that a customer might not get
an operator trained in the
new method each time he
places a call. As a result this
customer will receive two
Long Distance statements
with his monthly bill. One
statement will be for calls
billed under the old method
and the other for calls billed
electronically. We plan to in-
clude explanatory information
with each bill so the customer
will not think he's being bill-
ed twice."
McDonald emphasized that
not all customers will get the
new bills in September. "It
is conceivable," he said, "that
a customer could make sever-
al out-of-town calls and nev-
er get an operator trained in
the new method. In that, case
his Long Distance statement
would look the same as it al-
ways has."
McDonald said the complete
changeover would take about
three months.
