SOUTHERN MERCURY.
Hay 19, 1892.
INDUSTRIAL INNINGS.
It is probable that a cotton
factory, with 3,500 spindles and a
capital stock of $50,000, will be es-
tablished at Birmingham, Ala.
Work on the brick waílsof the
building for the Union Cotton
Mill, at La Fayette, Ga., have been
commenced and will be rapidly
pushed to completion..
A "Persian carpet" factory has
begun work near Moscow, Russia.
The product is softer, says an
exchange, than the genuine Per-
sian, but in color and design they
are identical. The price is about
one-half the Pers;an.
The Commonwealth Cotton Fac-
tory, with 6,000 spindles, will soon
be in operation at Durham, N. C.
The plant will be run in connec-
tion with the knitting mill at that
place. The machinery has been
purchased at a cost of about
$50,000.
The proposition L. Godfrey, oí
Providence, K. I., to erect a cot-
ton mill at Alexandria, La., was
favorably considered by the Board
of Trade and a committee appoint-
ed to investigate. The mill pro-
posed is to be a 5,000 spindle
plant to manufacture cotton yarn.
The Franklin Woolen Mills,
of Franklin, Ky., have completed
their new plant and are ready for
business. After the burning of
their mills last June, the company
was reorganised with increased
capital, and incorporated. Their
plant is equipped with the latest
improved machinery, and they
will turn out better goods than
ever before.
The Little Rock Cotton Mills, at
Little Rock, Ark., partially sup-
plies seven States with warp for
carpet weaving. Until recently
the only products of the mill have
been carpet warp and twine, which
have found ready sále in markets
outside of this State, very little
being used at home. New ma
chinery has been put in whereby
cotton rope and cotton batting for
quilting purposes have been added
to the list oí products.
The lace curtain factory which
is being erected at Nottingham,
Texas, a Galveston suburb, will
be incorporated with a capital of
$500,000. The brick building
which is nearing completion, is
three stories high, and will cost
about $50,000. The machinery
(looms from England, including
duty and freight, engine and boil-
ers, electric plant, etc.,) will cost
$150,000, and the yearly output in
lace curtains and mosquito netting
will be valued at $350,00.
In the reign oí Queen Elizabeth
first mention is made of hand knit-
ting. William See, in 1589, in-
vented the first knitting machine,
called a knittiug frame, or stocking
frame. He was refused a patent in
England and went to France and
established a factory at Rouen.
This machine was introduced into
the United State shortly after the
Revolutionary war, was modified
and improvecí by a Yankce, and a
factory established at Cohoes, N.
Y. in 1882.
Pears'
Soap
Skin blemishes, like
foul teeth, are the more
offensive because they
are mostly voluntary.
The pores are closed.
One cannot open them in
a minute; he may in a
month.
Try plenty of soap,
give it plenty of time,
and often; excess of good
soap will do no harm.
Jse Pears'—no alkali in
it; nothing but soap.
All sorts of stores sell
it, especially druggists;
all sorts of people are
using it
