YANKEE POODLE.
Once upon a time .old Grover C.
Sent forth a great big bellow,
To stop the use of white mon-ee
And coin alone the yellow.
So congress gathered at his beck
And loud and long debated,
Till silver got it "in the neck,"
And Shylock's greed was Fated.
Y ankee Boodle did the job-
Boodle there was handy.
Old Grover handled well his mob,
Congress was a dandy.
But still the panic moved along
And got Its deadly work in.
Each plutocrat was waxing fat,
While congress kept on shirkin';
Old Grover vetoed seigniorage,
Against the people's wishin',
And having nothing more to do
The old cues went a fiahln'.
Boodlers soon will lose their job,
Though boodle now is hand;;
Old Grover cannot rule his mob,
Ain't these times a dand¿?
O, how they feared the "commonweal,"
A guilty conscience pricked them,
Just think how Ecared they would feel
If General Coxoy licked them!
Perhaps for once a good scare
i Might stir them up to action,
And tide us through this desert bare
Until the next election.
Boodlers will soon lose their job,
Though boodle is now handy,
Old Grover cannot rule his mob,
Ain't these times a dandy?

ELOQUENECEIN THE SENATE.
Senator Teller, of Calorado, closed a
speech delivered in the United States
senate, Feb. 3, with the following elo*
quentlanguage:
"Mr. President—Whit the Ameri-
can psoplo need is legal tender money,
debt-paying money, and that is what
we are going to have in this country.
No system of fínance will ever bo ac-
cepted by the American people that
puts a great amount of paper money In
circulation that is not a debt paying
money. You cannot give to the na-
tional banks power to issue legal-ten-
der money. Tnat power must b3 held
and controlled by the government of
the United States. No power to make
money Is equivalent to the power to
coin gold and silver, and you might as
well surrender that powar as the pow-
er to mike legal tender money.
Either as a principle or as a policy,
the people of the United States are con-
tent with the $503,000,000 of paper
money that pays, as it does, their
debts', that buys of every man who has
to sell; that performs every function of
money that the yellow or the white
metal ever did perform, or ever can
perform. The people will not surren-
der that kind of mone y, and I want to
say here that, in my judgment, any po-
litical party which lends itself to that
scheme of destroying the greenbacks,,
will find Itself wiped o IT the face of the
earth.
I do not believe, Mr. President, that
a political party that will adopt the
scheme of the administration will, in
two years from now, carry a state west
of tho AUeghanles—certainly not one
in the extreme west and the extreme
north. This is a question that the peo-
ple are not to be fooled on. The cry that
goes up from the great moneyed insti-
tutions that we are about to go into
bankruptcy, that we are about to dis-
grace the nation by not meeting our ob-
ligations, is a false cry, and a vicious
ftttempt to alarm the people; but the
people will not be frightened, nor lose
confidence in the ability of the govern-
ment ta pay its debt* according to its
contracts.
Mr. President, every dollar that this
government owes will be paid. It will
be paid In the money, too, that is the
highest money of the world. It will
be paid in gold, or its equivalent in
gold, whether that be silver or paper.
We have been contending, not that It
shall be paid in depredated money, but
in good money, tt is false and any man
who makes the statement is untruthful
when he says that the senators who
stand for silver want to pay in cheap
and degraded money. We want to
make the sliver dollar the equal of the
jr. Id dollar. Then we want to pay in
that. We know the way to make it
the equal is to use It and give it the
function that the gold dollar has. Give
it the same privileges and it will be
the equal of gold. It is the equal now,
under the law, but we want to open the
mints to it. We want to give it the
same standing everywhere. We want
to bring up Its price as bullion, as we
shall do when'we have a market for it
at the mints, not in the interest of the
silver producer, not in the interest of
the men who dig silver in the mines of
Colorado, cr the west, but in the inter-
est of the great producing agencies of
the world, in the interest of humanity,
in the interest of men who toil, and in
tho Interest, also, of the men who have
the accumulations of the world in their
coffers.
Mr. President, I realize that we have
reached the crltloal point and period.
I realize that the agencies of wealth
and high position are against us. I
realize that if the people who believe
in legislating for the masses are nerve-
less and weak to-day the whole country
will be in the hands of monopolis-
tic greed. I realize that the opportu-
nities that we have made so much
boast of will be lost to the American
people; liberty and prosperity will dis-
appear from our land. I am not craven
enough to be frightened by the press
nor by the contempt that may be heap-
ed upon me when I say that I will see
to it, so far as this session is concerned,
that there shall be no hasty and wicked
legislation that shall carry out the fell
purpose that is now being attempted
in this country. [Applause on the floor
and in the galleries.]"
One class of people needs to be ad-
dressed as you would address an anvil
—with a sledge hammer. Tho o'her
class wants to be addressed as intelli-
gent men speaking to intelligent men.
The politician oan be knocked down
with nothing short of a sledge ham-
mer. The reasonable man can be
reached by gentle and earnest argu-
ment. The time has come when our
voting citizenship ought to consider it
a part Qf their duty to ke9p careful
memorandum of the action taken by
their representatives, whether in the
senate or the houso at Austin, to hold
them to account for what they do, for
what they say, for the way they vote,
for the manner in which they allow
themselves, if they do allow them-
selves, to be drawn into the wake of
political managers. We are learning
a great deal just in the&e present times.
They are a superb school of education.
Our young men will never forget its
teaohings, and they will be a part of
their oivil life."
Nothing Is more subtle, dangerous or
immoral than the maohinations of
wealth when it assails freedom.
