Have you read "The Book Thief"
yet?
Since midsummer, Tycher Li-
brary has been encouraging Jewish
Dallas to take part in "One Commu-
nity One Book: Reading Together."
Markus Zusak's award-winning
story is the choice for this first major
library project since Tycher's recent
expansion and rededication at the
Aaron Family JCC.
This "Community Read" will
culminate on Thursday Nov. 29,
with a discussion of the book in the
JCC's Zale Auditorium. Book clubs,
other groups and individuals who
have read the book— and those who
haven't!—are invited to "eavesdrop"
as three panelists with special inter-
ests and expertise share their ideas
from and about "The Book Thief."
Audience participation through
written questions will be part of the
evening, set to begin at 7 p.m.
Panelists include Nancy Austein,
director of the Temple Emanu-El
Library; Nils Roemer, University of
Texas at Dallas history professor;
and Kathie Williams, Piano ISD
educator.
Austein was a member of the As-
sociation of Jewish Libraries' com-
mittee that honored Zusak with its
Sydney Taylor Book Award. Roemer,
a native of Germany, specializes in
Jewish studies. Williams is a U.S.
Holocaust Museum Fellow who has
served on the Dallas Holocaust Mu-
seum's board and Teacher Advisory
Committee. TJP columnist and re-
viewer Harriet P. Gross will moder-
ate the panel.
"The Book Thief" is the story of
an orphan girl growing up in a small
town in World War II Germany.
What sets this book apart from all
others dealing with the Holocaust
years is the author's selection of
Death as its narrator.
"Humans are so afraid of Death,"
Zusak has said. "But what if Death is
also afraid of humans?" This prem-
ise, a revelation to the author, estab-

lishes the tone of the story and the
style of its telling: Death appears as
a character every bit as alive as Lei-
sel Meminger, her foster parents,
her friends and neighbors in a small
town on Munich's outskirts — and
the Jew hiding in her basement.
A film clip of Zusak discussing
how he came to choose this radi-
cal approach to storytelling will be
shown at the start of the Nov. 29
program. The event will be free and
open to the public, and refreshments
will be served.
Among those taking part in plan-
ning and coordinating the "Commu-
nity Read" and culminating panel
event are Roz Benjet, Rose Biderman
and Joy Mankoff of the Tycher Li-
brary Programming Committee;
Marcy Helfand, chair of Tycher's
advisory board; and the Tycher staff:
Library Director Joan Gremont, and
Judy Borejdo and Mary Jane Colpi,
librarians.
The "Book Thief" panel discus-
sion program is part of Tycher Li-
brary's three-pronged observance
of Jewish Book Month 2007, Nov. 4
through Dec. 4. Kickoff will be a spe-
cial children's program on Sunday,
Nov. 4; conclusion will be a cook-
ing demonstration and luncheon,
highlighting the library's extensive
collection of Jewish cookbooks, on
Tuesday, Dec. 4.
