TEXAS JEWISH POST #SINCE 1947
SINGLES
March 25,2010 I 9
Shaare Itefilla Singles Shabbaton to be held April 16-18
By Rachel Gross
The first statewide singles Shab-
baton is coming to Dallas. Dozens
of singles ages 35-55 will spend
a weekend together shmoozing,
learning and making new friends.
It will take place April 16-18 at
Congregation Shaare Tefilla, 6131
Churchill Way, Dallas. The cost
is $165 and all meals are included.
Reservations are due by March 30.
Singles from across Texas —
Dallas, Fort Worth, Houston, Aus-
tin and San Antonio — are invited.
Friends from other states can also
be invited; about 55 attendees are
expected.
Co-chair Gail Herson said the
goal is to bring singles together for
a fun weekend. She said it's imper-
ative to reach out to the 35-55 age
group.
"This weekend is about syna-
gogue, learning and fun," she
said. "We hope to form a group of
friends who happen to be single
and want to do activities together.
It's about having fun and interact-
ing with other lewish singles from
Texas."
Herson, Co-chair Paul Chafetz
and committee members John
Lacritz, David Zoller, Leora Lurie,
Gail Boker and Shaare Tefilla Ad-
ministrative Director Rabbi Benjy
Myers have been planning the
weekend for several months.
The Shabbaton will begin on
Friday evening with a meet-and-
greet followed by Shabbat services,
dinner and games. Saturday ac-
tivities include services; a comedy
show by Meyer Denn, executive
director of the Center for lewish
Education of the lewish Federation
of Greater Dallas; and bowling at
300 in Addison. The weekend will
wrap up with a brunch on Sunday
event, said friendship is the theme
of the weekend. He added that it's
vital for people with similar life
situations and values to participate
in events together.
"It's important for every mem-
ber of the lewish community to
feel comfortable within the com-
munity at large," he said. "Many
activities are geared toward fami-
lies, not singles. This is one way of
incorporating an important seg-
ment of the community, allowing
them to feel comfortable among
the rest of us."

morning at a private residence.
Attendees can choose to stay at
the home of a family or a hotel; all
accommodations are within walk-
ing distance of the synagogue.
Herson added that this is a way
to open the door to other mean-
ingful experiences. She hopes to
plan more retreats in Austin and
San Antonio.
"This is for people who are in
the second stage of their lives," she
said. "I believe this appeals to a lot
of people. If I have the opportunity
to help people connect as friends
and plan something fun, that's
fabulous. If you build it, they will
come."
Chafetz said he had heard about
a similar Shabbaton in Tennessee
and felt it was needed in the Dallas
Jewish community. He added that
this is an outlet for older singles to
meet each other in a comfortable,
synagogue setting.
"Younger singles have probably
never been married, whereas folks
in our age group may be divorced;

"We are in a different stage of life
and the project of finding a mate
is different at our age than it is in

ing for a life partner, others are just
