RATTLERS OPEN PRACTICE
COACH VILLARREAL
*
as i see it
BY RAUL TRFJO
Tliere's a bunch of dedicated
young men out sporting the Rat-
tler uniform, or what's left af-
ter practice, at Rattler Stadium
and along with them are some
dedicated coaches.
Tuesday morning in mild 98
degree weather Coach Eliseo
Villarreal, and his assistants
George Gomez and RoelMaldo-
nado were out trying to put to-
gether what will be one of the
strongest teams in 3A ball this
year.
Helping Villarreal also are
Pat Saenz, Ramiro Villegasand
Raymond Martinez.
Villarreal was named head
man after Gilbert Muzquiz re-
signed his position with the dis-
trict.
Villarreal is not amatuerand
expects only the very best from
the men that play for him and
through his mild manner he lets
you know that he means busi-
ness.
Throughout the year win or
lose this scribe will be behind
him 100 per cent because we
think and sincerely believe that
he wants what is best for the
football program.
Maldonado and Gomez have
indicated through their hard and
long hours at the gym and on
the field that they too wanttobe
number one in 3A football and
believe me it takes a special
type of person to leave the big
city lights and move to a place
that offers little except hard
work ... we hope to work with
them and assist them during the
football season.
The young men are members
of the Rattler team and they will
be out in full determination this
Friday at 5:30 as they scrim-
mage Aransas Pass in Falfur-
rias. The following week they
will again scrimmage Aransas
Pass here at Rattler Field.
Many of the young men are
working hopingto earn enough to
help their families and they still
show up for practice.
I've always said that we'd
stack youth from Rio Grande
City against anyone in South
Texas . . . working the way they
are is mere proof. . .
Gomez comes from New Mex-
ico Highlands and Maldonado a
native of Falfurrias comes from
the Brownsville coaching staff.
