Terrarium talk heard
by RGC Garden Club...
Members of the Rio Grande
City Garden Club heard a talk
on "How to Make a Terrarium"
by Mrs. Juan Lino Perez at a
meeting held in the Homemak-
lng Building of the High School
on November 9.
Mrs. Perez described the
making of a terrarium and de-
monstrated the tools to work
with. Mrs. Humberto E. Garza,
program chairman, showed
illustrations of terrariums that
she had started.
A terrarium is the type of
gardening project which will
take care of itself. Gardens
have been known to thrive in a
bottle for more than six years.
The bottle you choose can be
anything from a salad oil bot-
tle to a five gallon jub or an
antique liquor bottle. Glass
jars, old-fashioned candy jars,
fish bowls, aquariums, or large
goblets can be used. The only
requirements for a terrarium
are a clear glass container
with a cover.

Saturday's upcoming Pigskin
Jubilee was the main topic at
the Band Booster's meeting held
Monday night at the Band Hall
Band Booster president, Rev-
erned James Gebhart, stated
that the Jubilee will be in Wes-
laco all afternoon with the grand
finale taking place about 7:30
p.m. Rio Grande City people
are urged to attend and sup-

dres Canales, vice president;
Mrs. Elva Perez, secretary;
Mrs. Benicio Barrera, report-

The club voted to change the
regular meeting night to the
first Monday of each month at
7:30 p.m. It was also decided
that the Band Boosters would
sponsor a float in the Christ-
mas parade.
Members voted to work on
club policies, and agreed that no
action should be taken to add or
change any policies unless the
Executive Committee has been
notified and has acted or until
a full meeting has been held.
Also, the High School will not
talk about any official matters
unless cleared through the pre-
sident of the Band Boosters.
Gehart encourages all Band
parents to become active mem-
bers in the Band Booster organ-
ization. The Boosters have
about halfway reached their goal
of $5,000 to air condition the
Band Hall.

Select plants that can with-
stand moist soil, high humidity,
and low light intensity. Choose
slow growing types in scale
with the container you plan to
use. Do not crowd too many
plants into one container.
The best soil for a terrar-
ium is a basic potting mix con-
taining equal parts of coarse
river sand, garden loam, and
leaf mold. Mix a handful of
charcoal with the potting soil.
Because there is no way for
water to drain out of the bottle
place an inch thick layer of
charcoal or crushed rock on the
bottom for draining. Cover this
with two or three Inches of soil
mix.
Carefully wash all soil from
the roots of the plants, inspect-
ing each one to make sure it is
healthy and free of Insects.
Make a hole for the plant's
roots, then carefully ease the
plant down through the neck of
