Dollar Value
Of A Housewife
How much is :i housewife
worth in dollars and cents? This
unsentimental question conies up
every day in our courtrooms.
Whenever a housewife has died
in an accident and her family is
seeking damages, some amount
must stand for Iter dollar value—
what the family has lost because
of her death.
In most cases, the key issue
is how much it would cost to
hire a substitute housekeeper to
do approximately the same work
as long as necessary. Sometimes
the work is broken down into the
separate functions that the de-
ceased has been performing.

For example, an award may
be based on such items (per
week) as 10 hours of services as
a cook, 2 hours of services as a
waitress, 7 hours of services as
a laundress, 10 hours of services
as a babysitter, 2 hours of ser-
vices as a bookkeeper.
Of course, there are endless
variables. Suppose, for instance,
(hat the deceased was excep-
tionally capable in her domestic
chores. That could increase her
worth. Thus, the dollar value o£_
one housewife killed in an auto
collision was held to be higher
than average because she made
most or the family clothing
and canned considerable produce
from her backyard garden.
In another case, the figure
was higher because the woman
helped her husband in his plumb-
ing business; in another, because
she worked part-time as a bus
driver; in another, because she
gave special nursing to her ail-
ing child.
Docs the law allow compensa-
tion also for the "society, care,
she gave to her
children? Some
the theory that
"services" with a
and attention"
husband and
courts do, on
these too are '
price.
Other courts, however, don't
go that far, saying such bene-
fits are too intangible to be mea-
sured in money.
Furthermore, factors that may
be plus in one situation may be
minus in another. In one case
an award of $75,000 was held
too rigli, largely because the
woman had functioned at a be-
low-average level in family mat-
ters. She had been on unfriendly
terms with her husband, and, be-
cause of her ,own frailties, had
played only a minor role in the
upbringing of their children.

Musicians in Trinidad's
famous steel bands are going

Dr. Mohammed Aziz said the
high frequency sound of steel
band music permanently dam-
ages the players' ears, espe-
cially those of the drummers,
