world boxing champion?"
This the question asked of
Noi Cruz, veteran trainer of
young men seeking laurels in
amateur and professional
fistic worlds.
"If th" champion is Carlos
Palomi.io, it is fantastic,"
answered the man who has
been beside the Westminster
WBC welterweight cham-
pion of the world from the
very beginning. He shares
managership of Palomino
with Jackie McCoy of Van
Nuys.
"Carlos is an exceptional
young man. He does
everything we ask him to do
and just a little bit more.
I>et's say he gives us 110-
percent at all times. It
makes working with anyone
easy when they are willing to
listen and then follow m-
structions," continued Cruz
as he spoke enthusiastically
about the 28-year-old
Mexican-born scrapper who
has called Orange County his
home since 1950.
Palomino is the first and
only champion of the world
developed in boxing stables
of Cruz. If anyone would
have told him Palomino
would ascend the stairway of
fame 10 years ago, he might
have questined the
statement.
"Carlos came into the
Stanton Athletic Club when
he was 19 years old and
started pushing the heavy
bag around. He was working

The answer was af-
firmative and it was then
and there a "star was born."
At the time Armando
Muniz was working out after
serving a hitch in the United
States Army. Muniz was
active with the Army boxing
team when learning Palo-
mino was headed for the
service, made arrangments
for the current "King of
Swat" to get a boxing team
assignment.
Muniz saw something I
didn't in Carlos," said Cruz.
"He predicted the kid would
one day be challenging him
for the world championship.
He was almost right. Instead
of Palomino challenging
Muniz, it was the other way
around. Muniz challenged
Palomino." Muniz lost the

Cruz is currently
operating the Westminster
Athletic Club gym evenings
after a full day of work as a
roofer for a local contractor.
Approximently 30 young-
sters frequent the gym dialy,
working toward the ultimate
boxing goal — a cham-
pionship of some sort.
Currently, the club boasts
six champions in Junior
Golden Gloves.
"Having a boy like Pa-
lomino comes along once in a
lifetime but I am hopeful it
will happen again," said
Cruz. "I am not looking for

Cruz meets Palomino
every morning while in
training for a bout. They
gather at five p.m. and the
champion goes through six
miles of roadwork and Noi
runs along... For a couple
of miles," he said, and then
I wait for Carlos to pick me
up on the waj back.'
"During these training
periods it is a long day but I
love every minute of it."
Cruz figures he has seven
youngsters with armor to
make it to the too, but be-
tween ages of eight and 21, a
lot of water goes under the
bridge.
"Just whether they can en-
dure a tough training
schedule and become
dedicated, like all cham-
pions must, is the question.
Not many stay in the sport
after reaching high school
years and learning about
girls," he said
