March National Nutrition Month
The month of March is designated
"National Nutrition Month" by the Ameri-
can Dietetic Association, according to
Edna R. Ramon, Food Service Director of
the Rio Grande City CISD.
"It is appropriate during this time to
remind parents and teachers of the goals
and objectives of the School Nutrition
Programs sponsored by the United States
Department of Agriculture," stated Mrs.
Ramon.
"Nutrition means the food we eat and
how our bodies utilizes it, and its
importance spans the time from the cradle
to the grave," she stated. One of the goals
of education is to teach students what
foods contribute towards a healthy body
and mind. Lunchrooms across the nation
serve as a "laboratory of learning" to eat
Better health through better nutrition is
a worthy goal to pursue, concluded Mrs.
Ramon. Several activities are planned at
various schools in commemoration of this
"National Nutritional Month".
balanced meals.
The School Nutrition programs are
committed to serving low-cost nutritious
foods under the National School Lunch
Program and the School Breakfast Pro-
gram. According to findings published in
Outlook '83 Nutritional Effects of School
Lunch and School Breakfast, these pro-
grams have proven effective, not only in
alleviating hunger, but in encouraging
properly balanced diets for children, which
in turn, increases the learning ability of
our nation's youth.
