Boy Scout Camporee Held At Roma
Boy Scouts from Edinburg to
Zapata held their District Cam-
poree this past Saturday near
Roma on the banks of the Rio
Grande River.
Roma's Noel Benavides, who
served as one of the event's
organizers, indicated that 75 to 100
Scouts from the "Coyote" District
and 20 to 25 Scouting leaders were
on hand —
Registration for the camporee
took place Friday evening, and the
weekend was concluded Sunday
morning with an assembly near the
flag pole and the handing out of
awards.
The following 12 activities were
undertaken, for credit, by the
Scouts who attended: Compass
course, commando course, knot
tying, kims game, fire building, tug
of war, clove hitch around tree,
stretcher carry, patrol leader leads
blindfolded patrol, write how many
wrong things are seen at a sloppy
campsite, measurements height
and width, flag pole raising, and a
patrol flag contest.
Among the undertakings required
by the obstacle course were a "log
walk", climbing a rope ladder, a
rope walk, and an Indian crawl
blindfolded under logs and twine.
4 On the two compass courses, the
-Scouts had to measure the distance
traveled and end up at the right
markers. Benavides indicated that
there were roughly 50 feet between
each marker.

Camargo
C.ontinued From
in Mexico as Fundidora de
Aceros-Rio Grande, has leased a
16,000 square-foot warehouse which
will be used for making wooden
and aluminum patterns for the
steel foundry industry.
Miller said, "This is the first
phase of the project." The second
phase of the project will be a
cleaning operation for castings and
the third phase would be to build a
steel foundry to manufacture
castings. Only Phase One will be
implemented this month, and
phases two and three in the near
future.
Ken Parrish, director of Mexican
Operations for Kast Metals, has
been working with the Fundation
on this project for three years.
Parish indicated that Kast is ready
to begin moving equipment to
Camargo, adding that "local of-
ficials on both sides of the border
have been very helpful and cooper-
ative."
The trans-shipping and retail
industries in Starr County will
benefit since raw materials will be
brought in from other parts of the
U.S. through Starr County, and
finished products will be exported
from Camargo to U S destinations
"Even though most of the jobs
created will be in Mexico," Parrish
commented, "a lot of people
working for maquiladoras shop for
groceries and other products on the
U.S. side- this was the case when I
worked in Matamoros, Tamaulipas,
for another maquiladora for 13
years."
Sam Vale, president of Starr
Camargo Bridge Company and the
Industrial Foundation, commented,
"Our efforts are finally paying off,
and I think that more firms will
start looking at our area as a
possible site to locate."
Several of Kast Metals' custom-
ers have already expressed an
interest in locating divisions near
their supplier Rene Montalvo
added, "It's taken a long time for
this project to become a reality and
it has been frustrating at times...,
but you can't give up- that's what
the Foundation's job is all about."
