The Three Kings are shown bearing gifts to the Christ Child in a re-enactment
during the celebration of the Feast of the Epiphany at Our Lady of Refuge Catholic
Church. From left to right are Omar Canales and Mario Luis Guerra, Jr., as the wise
men, Frankie Guerra as Joseph, Annette Alaniz as Mary and Jose Roberto "Bobby"
Garcia as the other wise man.
Roma Church Observes
Feast Of Epiphany
Bv SYLVIA C. CANALES
The great old bell of Our Lady of
Refuge Catholic Church in Roma
peeled into the cold winter day and
drew people to celebrate the Feast
of the Epiphany recently.
The noon mass was co-celebrated
on Jan 3 by Father Roy Snipes,
O M l., and Father Don Dietz,
O.M.I., a visiting professor from
Oblate College in Washington, D.C.
The faithful observed a re-
enactrnent, directed by Mrs.
Cecilia £<wuides, of the visit of
the three kings paying homage to
the newborn King during the
reading of the Holy Gospel accord-
ing to St. Matthew, as follows:
"The light of a star (in the
drama, a beautiful star was seen
floating from the cnurch balcony to
the manger at the altar) guided the
three wise men to the place where
Baby Jesus was. They rejoiced
with great reverence as they found
the Baby Jesus with Mary, His
mother, and they fell down and
worshipped Him, and they brought
unto Him gifts of gold, frankin-
cense and myrrh."
The three kings, Melchor,
Gaspar, and Baltazar, were
portrayed by three cousins, Jose
Roberto (Bobby) Garcia, Jr., Omar
Canales, and Mario Luis Guerra,
Jr. Mario Luis was representing
the wise man who brought the
frankincense and used the incense
in parts of the ancient ritual of the
Mass where it is used.
Annette Alaniz portrayed Virgin

Plans Underway For
1988 Little League Season
*)
The Rio Grande City Little
League (boys baseball and girls
softball) will hold its' re-
organizational meeting for the 1988
Little League season at 7:30 p.m.
on Thursday, Jan. 21 at the Texas
Cafe.
The Little League encoui ages all
current and prospective coaches,
managers, umpires, parents, and
sponsors of Little League to attend.
Officers from 1987 will make a
report on the 1987 season and call
for election of officers for the 1988
season.
The meeting will also address the
issues of the Little League season
calendar, sponsor fees, field selec-
tions, field improvements, aux-
iliary activities, development of a
minor league, and Little League
projects.
Local Little League President
Juan M. Cantu said, "In 1987, the
Rio Grande City Little League, in
cooperation with a host of approx-
imately 20 local sponsors and
countless parent volunteers, made
the Little League experience
possible for 250 Rio Grande City
youngsters."
Cantu added, "We look forward
to an even more productive rela-
tionship in 1988, the 29th season for ^
the Rio Grande City Little League,
as we anticipate an excess of 300
youngsters looking forward to hear
the crack of the bat and the
heart-thumping words: Play Ball!"
Winter Texan Outlook
By LILLIAN KIRK
Mr and Mrs. Kenneth Boyea
from Warren, Massachusetts,were
here for a time last year and this
year stopped by to greet friends.
They were fortunate enough to
arrive last week in time for
Beverly Brown's birthday party
and to partake in the pot luck
dinner at St. John Methodist
Church. When asked if they were
going to stay a spell, Ken com-
mented that he was too young and
restless to settle down. They'd like
to see more of the U.S.A before
really retiring.
The Watsons, Ken and Rociel,
who have been with us the longest,
left ca-.ip Friday to visit other
places in Texas and other states,
before they'll head for home in the
spring Ellis and Alice Shuck are
headed for Tyler, Texas, where
they make their winter home after
spending a month with us.
The B.J. Owens family from
Wellington, Nevada finally saw a
clearing in the weather and de-
cided to head west. B.J. is the avid
cartoonist, who has so artistically
portrayed the action of the Winter
Texan during the grey days of
January.
Irene and Cliff Jarrett were
pleasantly surprised when their
niece, Leanna, and her husband,
Merle Harrison, from Lake of the
Ozarks, Arkansas, came by to
spend three days. They were given
a tour of the area by the Jarretts.
Sunday's football game (Browns
vs. Broncos) kept Paul Miiliron
and Bob Leiken hanging in there
until the end. The Broncos might
not have won, but what the heck,
the Millirons and Leikens celebrat-
ed with a cook out in the Leiken's
gazebo. That's the spirit, Browns.
A roly-poly park mascot, that's
Penny the cute little pic-a-pooh.
Smart little pooch has learned that
by patrolling the park, checking
every trailer, she gets treats
everywhere she goes. Talk about
knowing how to get a free meal.
Rockhound fever has struck
another member of La Loma R.V.
Park. We understand that John
Van Bur en's got the fever. Aside
from being a healthy hobby
because of all the walking, that
bending and stretching does
marvels for the waistlines. If you
don't believe it, just ask Andy.
You've heard of our golfers
Rosetta and Charlie from
Wisconsin; well, their eyes light up
whenever they see a streak of
sunlight. Haven't had many golf
days lately, but looking forward to
better days ahead.
Oh yes, the Martins' are back.
Like the swallows who return to
Capistrano, Gladys and Nick are
faithful returnees. They too are old
timers at La Loma Rio. It's always
good to see old friends who are
part of the park family.
Roma PTA Holds
Regular Meeting
*)
The Roma PTA held its regular
January meeting recently at the
intermediate library.
After the opening of the meeting
by Mrs. Tomas Garcia, president,
Mrs. Estela Canales, read the
opening PTA prayer. Ninth grader
Patricia Luera led the membership
in the pledge of allegiance.
After the treasurer's report, Mrs.
Garcia said she would name a
nominating committee for new
officers at the next meeting.
The program followed, with Dr.
Raymond Mussett presenting a
very informative program on the
deadly disease AIDS. Such things
as what is AIDS, and how to avoid
the disease were discussed. He also
stated that a survey done at
Harvard University Medical School
predicts that by the year 1991, 10
million to 20 million persons will
die of such a disease.
He also stated that in 1987, $8
billion were used to treat patients
that had AIDS, and that by 1991
about $64 billion would be used. Dr
Mussett also stated that by 1991,
one out of every thirty men would
be affected by AIDS
In closing he said that (fj^
Dr Edward Koop, Surgeon General
had said that the only way to stop
this infection was to educate
everyone starting at the third
grade.
The next regular meeting will be
held at 7:00 on Feb. 8, 1988. The
subject will be "Hygiene", and will
be presented by Frances Ramirez,
R.N., Texas Department of Health,
Region VIII, at Rio Grande City.
V.A. Benefit
Increases Noted
According to Art Herbert, the
Veterans Servive Officer for Stan-
County, the Social Security Admin-
istration has recently announced a
cost-of-living increase of 4.2 per-
cent in Social Security benefits,
effective Dec. 1,1987.
Accordingly, the Veterans Ad-
ministration h*s amended its regu-
lations to implement corresponding
VA benefit increases in pension
under Public Law 95-588 (New
Improved Pension); the maximum
annual income limitations in
pension programs in effect on June
30, 1980 (Old Law Pension) and on
Dec. 31, 1978 (308 Pension); and the
maximum annual income limita-
tions and the rate formulas
applicable to Parents' DIC.
Since these rates were effective
Dec. 31, 1987, beneficiaries should
notice the adjustments in their
pension checks beginning with the
Jan. 1,1988 check.
Provisions for an increase in VA 1
compensation and DIC benefits
have not yet passed Congress.
Currently it appears that Congress
will award an increase of 4.1
percent to those veterans in receipt
of compensation and to those
widows and children of deceased
veterans in receipt of DIC.
Ttaxigh a date of passage cannot
accurately be projected, it is
thought "that the effective date of $■
increase when passed by Congress
and signed by the President will be
Dec. 1,1987.
