The Starr County Agricultural
Stabilization and Conservation
Service provided area ranchers and
farmers assistance to sustain the
wrath of recent weather-related
disasters.
In the years 1988 through 1991,
$1,087,313 were paid to ranchers
( for emergency livestock feed
purchases to help maintain their
breeding herds. This constitutes
21,746,261 pounds of livestock
feed.
Financial assistance was also
provided area farmers in 1988 and
1989, to help them cope with crop
losses caused by the drought.
Payments to farmers by this office
% for the two years amounted to
$4,807,000.
Late 1991 has taken a turn for the
better because of the recent rains.
Pastures are looking good and will
provide the ranchers with a much
needed breather before the winter
months. Producers who seeded their
pastures got a head start in grass
production.
The Starr County ASCS Office
has cost shared with local
farmers/ranchers to perform
conservation practices to prevent
erosion and enhance wildlife
habitat. This office paid producers
$232,000 in 1990 and part of 1991.
This amount reflects approximately
50 percent of the total cost to
improve about 20,(XX) acres of land.
In spite of adverse weather
conditions every so often, Starr
County landowners have provided
this country with its share of food
and fiber. They have also learned to
balance crop and livestock
production with the county's natural
resources. The proof is in Starr
County's popularity with those
who love the outdoors.
