Roma Gladiators split
two district contests
The Roma Gladiator varsity
basketball team registered a split in
their two District 32-4A games this
past week, defeating Mercedes in a
close game on the road and losing a
tough decision at home to the
Raymondvi He Bearkats.
On Tuesday night, Jan. 14, the
Gladiators defeated the Mercedes
Tigers 65-61 in a tight contest in
Mercedes. The score was tied at 14
after one quarter, and the Gladiators
held a 31-28 halftime advantage.
Roma extended its lead to 50-44 by
the end of the third quarter.
Roma Head Coach Jesus "Chuy"
Guerra, Jr., commented, "It was
pretty close all the way. We held on
to win. It was a tough game and we
won; that's the most important
thing."
Guerra added, "I thought wc
rebounded pretty well. Wc played
with a lot of control. Fast breaks
were hard to come by. Our outside
shooting was the difference in the
game. Defensively, we held
everybody but Rod Trevino in
check."
Roma's biggest lead was an
eight-point margin early in the
fourth period. The Tigers could
come no closer than four points.
The Gladiators hit 16 of 25 shots
from two-point range and sank 7 of
21 three-point attempts. Jerry Rosa
drilled three three-pointers and
Dickie Garza sank two. Heron Perez
and Luis Ramirez each sank one
thrcc-pointcr. Joe Salinas hit the
only Mcrccdcs thrcc-pointcr of the
game.
The Gladiators sank 12 of 16 free
throw chances, compared to 4 of 8
for the Tigers.
Amcrico Salinas was Roma's
leading scorer with 19 points. Juan
C. Munoz also reached double
figures with 10 points. The rest of
Roma's scoring went as follows:
Jerry Rosa, 9; Leo Mireles, 8;
Dickie Garza, 7; Luis Ramirez, 6;
Heron Perez, 4; Eden Guerra, 2.
Mcrccdcs center Rod Trcvino kept
the Tigers in the game with 30
points. Joe Salinas was the only
other Tiger to reach double figures
with 11 points.
Amcrico Salinas and Leo Mireles
paced the Gladiators on the boards
with six rebounds apiece. Dickie
Garza and Luis Ramirez contributed
six and four assists, while Heron
Perez achieved three steals. Salinas
and Joey Garcia each drew one
charging foul.
On Friday night, Roma lost a
close 84-78 decision at home to the
Raymondville Bearkats. Roma led
23-20 after one quarter and 43-42 at
halftime, but Raymondville pulled
out to a 61-57 advantage by the end
of the third quarter.
Guerra commented, "It was a
see-saw game. We were always
within range in the second half. We
played hard, but our defense gave up
too many easy baskets. Wc fought
them to the very end."
The coach added, "They
(Raymondville) got too many
uncontested fast breaks and layups.
Wc had a lot of offensive balance,
and we had a few fast breaks. We
did a good job of running, but we
didn't get back on defense."
The Gladiators hit 23 of 43 shots
from two-point territory and hit 4
of 20 three-point attempts. Jerry
Rosa sank two three-pointers for
Roma, and Luis Ramirez and
Dickie Garza hit one each. Adrian
Cervantes had the only three-pointer
for the Bearkats.
The Gladiators sank 20 of 32 free
throw opportunities, compared to
19 of 29 for the Bearkats.
The Gladiators had a balanced
scoring attack with five players in
double figures. Americo Salinas
was the leading scorer with 20
points, and Juan C. Munoz, Jerry
Rosa, Dickie Garza and Luis
Ramirez chipped in with 17, 15,
11, and 11 points, respectively.
Eden .Guerra and Leo Mireles
rounded out the scoring with 2
points each.
Dan Marcs led the Bearkats with
20 points, and Adrian Cervantes and
Jaime Salinas made strong
offensive contributions with 18 and
14 points.
Americo Salinas led the
Gladiators on the boards with 11
rebounds. Dickie Garza and Juan C.
Munoz added six and five boards.
Heron Perez contributed four assists
to the Roma offense.
Gladiators Luis Ramirez and
Americo Salinas also drew two
charging fouls apiece.
The Gladiators are now 2-2 in
district play and 16-6 on the season.
Edcouch-Elsa is currently on top of
the District 32-4A standings with a
3-0 record and Raymondville holds
second place with a 2-1 mark.
Roma, Sharyland and Brownsville
Rivera own 2-2 records in district
play.
The Gladiators had an open date
on Tuesday night and will entertain
Brownsville Rivera at home on
Friday evening, Jan. 24. The
Gladiators will face the Los Fresnos

The Rio Grande City Rattlers
lost hard fought contests last week
to two of the most powerful
basketball teams in the Valley,
including a heartbreaking one-point
loss to McAllen Memorial on the
road Friday nighL
The Rattlers lost a 69-59 decision
to the Mission Eagles at home in a
hard fought and action-packed game
Tuesday night, Jan. 14.
The Eagles led 19-12 after one
quarter, 32-23 at halftime and 49-35
after three quarters. The Rattlers
rallied in the fourth quarter to cut
the deficit to seven points, but the
Eagles sank some clutch free
throws to put the game away.
Rattler Head Coach John Brown
commented, "The kids played hard
and showed they can compete well
against the strongest basketball
programs around. Mission just had
too much firepower."
Brown emphasized, "We've been
playing better team defense. The
hustle, desire and dedication have
always been there."
The coach indicated, "Guy
Peterson, who scored 19 points, got
some baskets off offensive
rebounds. Wc got the ball inside to
him for some shots near the
basket." The Rattlers also sank four
of their seven three-point baskets
during their fourth quarter
comeback.
Brown said, "Wc went in
knowing that Mission's Rosman
Garcia and Koy Dctmcr had had 16
and 10 three-pointers in the
previous four games. Wc knew we
needed to concentrate on slopping
their outside shooting, while trying
to deny Isaac Valadez the ball
inside."
Brown added, "We did well in
stopping their outside shooting as
Dctmer did not score a point, but
we couldn't stop Valadez inside."
The Rattlers hit 15 of 39, or 38
percent of their shots from
two-point range but sank 7 of 12
three-point attempts. Gino
Gonzalez drilled four three-pointers
for the Rattlers, and Sammy
Ramos, Bobby Gutierrez and
Tomas Rosas hit one each.
Rosman Garcia drilled all four of
the Eagles' three-pointers.
The Rattlers sank 7 of 14 free
throw opportunities, while the
Eagles hit 20 of 31 from the charity
stripe.
Guy Peterson was the Rattlers'
leading scorer with 19 points. Gino
Gonzalez, who sank four
three-pointers, also reached double
figures with 15 points. The rest of
Rio's scoring went as follows:
Benny Carmona, 6; Bobby
Gutierrez, 5; Tomas Rosas, 4;
Edward Castillo, 4; Sammy
Ramos, 3; Isaias Bazan, 2; Pete
Gonzalez, 1.
Isaac Valadez ignited Mission
offensively with 28 points. Tito
Olivarcz and Rosman Garcia also
achieved double figures with 19 and
13 points.
Guy Peterson paced the Rattlers
on the boards with nine rebounds,
and Gino Gonzalez and Tomas
Rosas chipped in with five apiece.
Sammy Ramos contributed three
assists.
On Friday night, the Rattlers held
a 12-point lead going into the
fourth quarter against McAllen
Memorial on the road, but the
Mustangs came back to win a
61-60 triumph. The Rattlers led
16-10 after one quarter, 34-20 at
halftime and 52-40 after three
quarters.
Brown commented, "Wc should
have won the game. We missed five
free throws in the last 40 seconds,
including three on onc-and-one
situations. We had already lost the
lead with 40 seconds remaining.
They hit 7 of 8 free throws in the
fourth quarter and wc hit 3 of 8."
Another blow to the Rattler
victory hopes came during the
fourth quarter when Memorial sank
a three-pointer, was fouled on the
play and con verted the three ensuing
free throws.
Brown said, "We got cold in our
shooting in the fourth quarter. They
got hot in their three-point
shooting late in the third quarter and
early in the fourth quarter. Their
defensive pressure forced a couple of
key turnovers. Until the end of the
third quarter, wc did everything we
had to do to win."
Brown noted that McAllen
Memorial has a 21-2 record on the
season and is considered by many to
be the most talented team in the
Valley.
Brown said, "The kids played real
well and deserved to win. Wc played
excellent defense, which caused
Memorial to shoot poorly for the
first three quarters. We worked our
offense until we got exactly the
shot we wanted and we converted
most of them."
The coach added, "We hit a good
mixture of inside and outside shots.
We slowed down the tempo to take
