School attended the 35th Annual
Texas Energy Science Symposium
for outstanding high school
students at the University of Texas
at Austin June 6-9.
Peel was joined by Alberto A.
~ Alvarez, Jr., a teacher at Roma
** High School.

Educational Programs Advisor.

Central Power & Light
Company, a member of the Texas
Atomic Energy Research
Foundation, a nonprofit
organization dedicated to the
advancement of energy research, is
joining with the university in
^ sponsoring the symposium. The
company sponsored 22 students and
21 teachers.
The university, CPL and other
utility companies from throughout
Texas hosted some 250 science
students and their teachers who were
selected to attend by their schools.
Participants in the symposium
attended lectures and workshops
focusing on topics such as solar
energy, photovoltaic energy,
nuclear power generation, nuclear
waste disposal and nuclear fusion.
Featured lecturers included
Astronaut Carl Meade of the
Johnson Space Center, Chris
Johnson, CPL's manager of the
South Texas Nuclear Project, and
Dr. Bill Drummond of the
University of Texas.
Students and teachers also
participated in interactive tours of
the university's science laboratories,
including the geology, fusion
astronomy and robotics
laboratories, and the nuclear lusion
training reactor.

JOB ANNOUNCEMENT
The Starr County Attorney's Office announces its intention to
hire Two Abatement Officers in order to assist Starr County in
its efforts against illegal dumping and littering. This program is
funded by the Texas Natural Resource Conservation Commis-
sion. Applicants must have a current Basic Peace Officer
Certification issued by the Texas Commission on Law Enforce-
ment Officer Standards and Education. 'Hie salary is $1,250.00
per month. The abatement officers will be full time positions.
They will be enforcing the Texas Litter Abatement Laws and
other state statutes. This is to include littering and/or illegal
dumping. As law enforcement officers the ability to enforce
state statutes will facilitate the prosecution process. The abate-
ment officers will he ffivolvcd inpitblic speakiagxrigageoxgnte
involving community awareness and education.
Applicants should come by the County Attorney's Office at the
Third Floor of the Starr County Courthouse for an application.

Ouellette received a bachelor of
science degree during graduation
ceremonies at Howard Payne
University on May 13.
Ouellette, the son of Mr. and
Mrs. Roland Ouellette of Rio
Grande City, is a physical education
major.
Approximately 220 students
received degrees during the
ceremony. Howard Payne
University is located in
Brownwood, Texas.

The Class of 1973 will hold its
reunion this Saturday, June 17 at
the Fort Ringgold Motor Inn in
Rio Grande City.
Dinner will be served from 7:30
to 8:30 p.m. Saturday. The dance
will begin at 9 p.m. and continue

donated to Imelda Garza, right, on behalf of the
Woodmen of the World Southwest Texas Fraternal
Association.

state wheelchair project
Woodmen of the World Lodge
No. 6052, Rio Grande City hosted
the Texas Jurisdictional State
Wheelchair Project Presentation
May 6 at the Immaculate
Conception Church Parish Hall in
Rio Grande City.
On behalf of Woodmen of the
World Southwest Texas Fraternal
Association, a motorized wheelchair
was donated to Imelda Garza from
Rio Grande City, who was
diagnosed with stiff persons
syndrome and dystonia.

awards scholarships
For more than 10 years in a row,
the Association of Texas
Professional Educators of Roma
Local Unit has been very generous
in awarding scholarships to Roma
graduating seniors.
At the present time, some 300
persons, both professional and
paraprofessional, are current
members of the Roma local unit
and join more than 70,000
members statewide.
With more members, there are
more scholarships and during the
past years since the association
organized, more than $10,(XX) have
been awarded in scholarships to
Roma ISD students.
In this year alone, $2100 was
given to seven students, with each

SWT Dean's List
Marilynn Barrera Gallagher, a
junior majoring in Animal Science,
was named to the Dean's List for
the second consecutive semester at
Southwest Texas State University
at San Marcos.
Marilynn is the daughter of Ret.
M/Sgt. John J. and Maria dclos
Angeles B. Gallagher of San
Antonio. Her proud uncles and
godparents of Rio Grande City are
J. Mario EL.rrera, Libcrato Barrera
and Mr. and Mrs. Derly Ramirez.
In order to be considered for the
collegiate academic honor roll, a
student needs a 3.5 or higher grade
point average on a 4.0 scale: ^
student receiving S300 each.

Southwest Texas State Manager
Johnny Huggins of San Antonio
carried out the introduction of the
wheelchair project. He explained
how all the Woodmen lodges
throughout Texas donated to this
project. The wheelchair was
custom-made to fit Mrs. Garza's
needs.
The guest speaker was
Jurisdictional State Past President
Carlos Salazar from San Juan.
Salazar discussed the need for
continuing fraternalism and the
objectives of Woodmen of the
World.
National representatives attending
were Edward Rodriguez, San Juan;
and Daelia de Leon from Orange
Grove, Texas.
Mrs. Melissa Reyna, on behalf of
Imelda Garza, read a letter thanking
'ill of the WOW lodges and its
members as the motorized
wheelchair will make things much
easier for her to get around.
