Dayna Alaniz recognized as
All-American Scholar
The United Slates Achievement
Academy has announced that Dayna
D. Alani/. has been named an
All-American Scholar.
The USAA has established the
All-American Scholar Award
Program to offer deserved
recognition to superior students
who excel in the academic
disciplines. The All-American
Scholars must earn a 3.3, or higher,
grade point average. Only scholars
selected by a school instructor,
counselor, or other qualified
sponsor are accepted. These scholars
arc also eligible for other awards
given by the USAA.
Dayna D. Alaniz, who attends
Roma Jr. High, was nominated for
this national award by Miss
Hinojosa, a counselor at the school.
Dayna D. Alaniz will appear in
the All-American Scholar
Yearbook, which is published
nationally.

youth is more important than ever
before in America's history.
Certainly, winners of the
All-American Scholar Awards
should be congratulated and
appreciated for their dedication to
excellence and achievement," said
Dr. George Stevens, Executive
Director of the United States
Achievement Academy.
The Academy selects
All-American Scholars upon the
exclusive recommendation by
teachers, coaches, counselors, and
other qualified sponsors. Once
awarded, the students may be
recognized by the USAA for other
honors.
Dayna D. Alaniz is the daughter
of Abel and Clarivcl Alaniz. The
grandparents are Audencio and
Beatriz of Houston and Ricardo and
Aurora of Cd. Miguel Aleman,
Tam. Mex.
The United States Achievement
Academy also has announced that
Dayna D. Alaniz has been named a
United States National Award
winner in Honor Roll.
This award is a prestigious honor
very few students can ever hope to
attain. In fact, the Academy
recognizes less than 10 percent of
all American high school students.
Dayna D. Alaniz, who attends
Roma Jr. High, was nominated for
this national award by Miss
Hinojosa, a counselor at the school.
She will appear in the United
States Achievement Academy
Official Collegiate Yearbook,
which is published nationally.
Troop 93 Boy Scouts
have busy July
The month of July was a busy
month for Boy Scout Troop 93 of
Rio Grande City.
The following members spent
one week at Boy Scout Camp Perry
near Rio Hondo: Scouts Raul
Aguilar, A. David Ibarra, Miguel
A. Lopez, Mario A. Lara, Jesus A.
Garcia and Raudel S. Rodriguez.
While at camp they earned 32 merit
badges between them and won the
Camp Inspection Award one day.
Adults attending were
Encamacion Garcia, Rudy Gonzalez
and Rev. James L. Gebhart.
During another week six
members of the troop made a
50-mile hike, going from Rosita to
Falcon State Park and back to
Rosita, going 10 miles a day for
five days and spending five nights
en route.
The six boys were Raudel S.
Rodriguez, Jesus A. Garcia, Mario
A. Lara, Matthew D. Brown,
Miguel A. Lopez and Fidel Garcia.
Scoutmaster Gebhart and
Committeeman Encarnacion Garcia
joined them.
This made the fourth 50-miler
hike for Scoutmaster Gebhart and
the second for Committeeman
Garcia.
Dayna Alaniz
The Academy selects USAA
winners upon the exclusive
recommendation of teachers,
coaches, counselors, and other
qualified sponsors and upon the
Standards of Selection set forth by
the Academy. The criteria for
selection are a student's academic
performance, interest and aptitude,
leadership qualities, responsibility,
enthusiasm, motivation to learn and
improve, citizenship, attitude and
cooperative spirit, dependability,
and recommendation from a teacher
or director.
Voting machine
tests scheduled
The first test of the A1S voting
machine for the Aug. 12 South
Texas Community College election
will lake place at the County
Clerk's Office on Friday, Aug. 4 at
5 p.m.
The second lest will be conducted
on Saturday, Aug. 12 at 5 p.m. in
the Starr County Commissioners
Courtroom.
Anyone with questions about the
voting machine tests should contact
the County Clerk's Office at
487-2101.

Americorps member George
Requenez will be presenting an
informative one-hour session on
Wednesday, Aug. 9 at 9 a.m. at the
Starr County Fairgrounds.
The presentation will cover the
awareness and the public concerns
on environmental issues such as
waste, recycling, reducing and
landfills. The discussion will focus
on how these issues affect our
environment and our future.
The public is encouraged to
attend the session. Anyone seeking
further information should contact
the County Extension Office at
487-2306.
Gracia Lerma
completes
Marine training
Marine Pvt. Gilberto Gracia
Lerma, son of Victor M. Garcia of
Route 2 and Maria C. Garcia of Rio
Grande City, recently completed the
11 weeks of intensive training
required to earn the tide "Marine."
During the training conducted at
Marine Corps Recruit Depot, San
Diego, Gracia Lerma completed a
variety of challenging training
evolutions designed to improve
physical and mental strength.
In addition to the rigorous
physical conditioning program,
classroom instruction and practical
application exercises, Gracia Lerma
was introduced to the core values of
the Marine Corps which include;
honor, courage, and commitment.
The importance of the core values
was illustrated throughout the
training which included customs,
courtesies, Marine Corps history
and traditions.
Through teamwork and self-
discipline Gracia Lerma became
proficient in military skills
including rifle marksmanship,
uniform regulations, first aid and
close-order drill.
The Marine Corps is a tough,
smart and elite force in which
Gracia Lerma will continue his
training throughout his career.
He is a 1994 graduate of Rio
Grande City High School.

55rt Anniversary

FIFTY-FIFTH ANNIVERSARY- Mr. and Mrs. A.V. |
Peterson celebrated their 55th anniversary on June
1995. The couple were wed in I'harr in 1940 and have
been residents of Starr County since 1946. They were
honored at a party at the Club in Cimarron on June 13*
attended by friends and their three sons and their wives,# |
Mr. and Mrs. Bob Peterson, Mr. and Mrs. James (
Peterson and Mr. and Mrs. David Peterson.
Troop 85 Boy Scouts
complete summer camp
Boy Scout Troop 85, sponsored
by Henry Clay Davis Post No.
8526 of the Veterans of Foreign
Wars, returned recently from a
successful summer camp at Camp
Perry.
There was swimming, rifle, first
aid, canoeing, metalwork, artwork,
lcatherwork and pioneering, as well
as emergency preparedness and
wilderness survival for those scouts
brave enough.
Currently the boys are preparing
for a trip to Padre Island.
A board of review, followed by a
court of honor to award merit badge
mastered, will be held in August.
Any boys who have completed
fifth grade and are not yet 18 years
old may join. Meetings are held at
the VFW Post on Wednesdays from
7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.
Garcia named Schreiner
admissions counselor
KERRVILLE - Rcy Garcia of
Rio Grande City recently was hired
by Schreiner College in Kerrvillc to
be a counselor in the department ol
admissions.
Garcia graduated with a degree in
business administration from
Schreiner College in May.
As admissions counselor, Garcia
will be responsible for helping to
recruit students to Schreiner and,
once recruited, make their transition
to college life a positive experience.
He will concentrate on the
southwest portion of Texas,
working with students and high
schools in the area.
Garcia is the son of Rcynaldo and
Lcticia Garcia of Rio Grande City.
He graduated from Rio Grande City
High School in 1991.
