Storm in RGC brings
deluge, high winds
An isolated thunderstorm on the
afternoon of Tuesday, Aug^'J
brought rains ol close to three
inches irul high winds to some
areas of Starr County, but many
areas received no rainfall
whatsoever.
Local weather observer Frank
Anderson indicated that
approximately three inches of rain
loll hi his residence in the sudden
thunderstorm that began shortly
before 6 p.m. on Aug. 1 and came
to an end just al ter 8 p.m. Anderson
said, "I would estimate we easily
had wind gusts ol 50 miles per
hour."
Mr. and Mrs. Elder Neie, who
live several miles west of Rio
Grande City, recorded only .06 inch
of rain in the 24 hours that ended at
7 a.m. on Wednesday, Aug. 2.
District Conservationist Arturo
Ibarra said, "We could have had a
small tornado in town. One
business had their roof blown off
and some nearby trees were
uprooted. Some signs were blown
over here in town. Some shrubs and
trees were blown over. It may have
just been high winds."
Ibarra indicated. It was not a
general rain. Some of the areas
from the road to La Victoria to FM
155 or Fairgrounds Road up to FM
490 received two to three inches. It
rained at sort of an angle."
Ibarra noted, "Rincon had no rain
and part of HI Sau/. had no rain, but
areas just cast of El Sauz got two
inches. Roma didn't get any rain.
Areas from Los Garcias to the west
didn't receive any rain."
Me indicated that two to three
inches of rain fell in the immediate
Rio Grande City area. One ranch a
few miles north of Rio Grande City
recorded five inches of rain.

Dear Editor:
I want to take this opportunity to
congratulate the Rio Grande City
School District in being selected
and approved for the Junior Army
Reserve Officers' Corps program.
This program once was alive in
our School District from the 60's
to the late 70's. It has always
proven great positive results for the
school, community and above else
the students.
Once again, our community will
see in our own Fort Ringgold
Parade Fields the wonders and
excitement of the RATTLE
BATTALION. These cadets will
soon show us their impressive Drill
and Ceremonies at our parades,
ceremonies, Military competitions,
Military Dining - Ins/Outs and
above all the raising of Old Glory
at our Football games with much
pride. Citizenship will sprout in
our local community. I really
believe in my city and its people.
This will happen.
I am proud to have been part of
the initiatives in bringing this
distinctive program to our
community. As a former Director
of Student Activities, I saw the
need for student involvement
through participation in an extra-
curricular activity. Through the
efforts of many supporters this
program has been made a reality.
This community has many
veterans of all services available as
volunteers to this program. We
have current officers and NCO's in
this community to serve as role
models. I as others arc products of
Army Reserve Officers' Training
Corps. This is a great program!
My only wish was to have had this
program when I was in school.
Junior Army Reserve Officers'
Training Corps (JAROTC) can
only be successful only through the
support of its community. Let us
not forget that we are here to
support our teachers,
administrators, and students.
Again, I congratulate you and
best wishes. If can be of any
assistance don't hesitate to call. I
will be looking forward towards
your Military Dining-Ins/Outs in
the Spring.
