North Grammar Elementary Principal Alfredo Garcia is pictured above cutting a
cake during a Friday afternoon celebration in honor of grandparents. The school
function was held in honor of Grandparents Day. Counselors at North Grammar
organized the merienda and program. The school is currently holding a writing
contest in which the young students explain "What My Grandparents Mean to Me."

North Grammar Elementary
School has been carrying out a
number of activities to enable the
school's students to honor their
grandparents as part of Grandparents
Day.
Counselors at North Grammar
organized and carried out a special
merienda Friday afternoon as part of
the observance of Grandparents
Day. Counselors involved in
organizing the merienda and
program were Thelma Molina,
Elma Lopez and Manuel Olivarcz.
On Thursday, Sept. 7, Father
Edward Ortega spoke to North
Grammar students about the
importance of honoring and
cherishing their grandparents. He
held a question and answer session
with the young students.
At Friday's merienda, students
had a special lime of sharing and
reading with their grandparents in
the school library.
North Grammar is currently
holding a writing contest entitled
"What My Grandparents Mean to
Me." Kindergarten students and first
graders drew pictures honoring their
grandparents, while second, third,
fourth and fifth grade students wrote
essays expressing their admiration
for their grandparents.
At Friday's merienda, North
Grammar Principal Alfredo Garcia
cut a special cake m honor of
grandparents. Cake and punch were
served to the children and adults
present at the merienda.
Troop 93 elects new
Senior Patrol Leader
Boy Scout Troop 93 of Rio
Grande City has elected a new
Senior Patrol Leader to lead the
troop.
Scout Jesus A. Garcia was elected
to be the new Senior Patrol Leader
replacing Raudcl S. Rodriguez, who
is now the troop Guide.
Miguel A. Lopez was clected to
be the new Assistant Senior Patrol

hearing on a proposed budget for the 1996 fiscal year.

as ambassador
Volanda Pcna and Americorps
member from Webb County Gus
Luna, Jr., arc traveling throughout
Texas as ambassadors to the Texas
Americorps Advisory Council.
On June 28 they made a
presentation in Houston to the
Texas Commission for National
and Community Service. Volanda
and Gus spoke to ihe group on
existing community service
programs thai are working.
On Sept. 17-18 the team will
join up again with Americorps
administrators and do their
presentation in Dallas at the Harvey
Hotel.
Yolanda was selected for her
innovative community projects and
her ability to rcach close to 2000
students on environmental issues in
Starr County.

witness. The defense counsel
mentioned part of the statement,
but not all of it. They argued that a

to the detriment of Mr. Bernard. It
was part of the statement originally
given. I argued that the jurors
should sec the second page of the
statement."
Garza said that Bernard was
"accused of official misconduct,
allegedly taking S85 in a fine from
a Mexican national and not turning
in that fine." Silva declared, "The
witness couldn't identify the
individual...Mr. Bernard says he
never :;aw the lady and that he never
stopped her."
Garza said, "We polled individual
jurors and asked them if the state
proved guilt beyond a reasonable
doubt. Nine of them agreed that the
stale had not proven their case. We
asked ihe jurors to tell the D.A.
this. It's my understanding they
did."
Assistant District Attorney Jon
West was ihe lead counsel for the
prosecution, while Kevin O'Hanlon
was ihe lead counsel for the defense.
David Garza said, "It is my
understanding thai Mr. Bernard had
been suspended with pay."

The Honorable William R. Page, Municipal Court
Judge for Rio Grande City, has obtained a Concealed
Handgun Proficiency Certificate. He scored 2.W> out of
250 possible points on Sept. 8 at the U.S. Customs
hiring Range. A total of 175 points is required. Page's
certificate was the first awarded in Starr Count} under
the Concealed Weapon Proficiency Course conducted by
certified instructor Thelma Myers.
