New RGCHS choir director
focuses on musical diversity
World traveler, sushi lover,
multi-talented musician and
English teacher
All of the above describes Doran
Schoeppach, who replaces Jose
Florcs as Rio Grande City High
School 's choir director.
Schocppach, 32, came to Rio
Grande City by way of Tokyo and
Minneapolis.
He was graduated from Belgrade
(Minn.) High School, located a 100
miles west of the Twin Cities, and
Augsburg College in Minneapolis,
where he earned a bachelor of arts
degree in music education.
His education and musical
abilities took him to Japan, where
he taught and studied for three
years at Japan Lutheran College in
Tokyo
While liv ing in the land of the
rising sun, Schoeppach developed a
taste for raw fish (sushi), warm rice
wine (saki) and the language (He
speaks Japanese very well; just ask
him to say something and you'll be
greeted by rapid-fire syllables and
sounds you've only heard in
God/.ilia movies).
He taught English and music in
Japan, and has also taught music
privately in Minneapolis Plus,
Schocppach worked with the
African Methodist Church in
Minneapolis for three years
Now, after being on the job in
deep South Texas for only two
months, one wonders how things
arc going for the transplanted
Midwestern-Japanese music and
voice coach.
"So far, so good,'' he said in a
pensive tone "It's been a challenge
because I've been working at
developing tlic program "
The choir department has been
stymied somewhat by the loss of
many experienced singers and
Schoeppach's installation of a new
musical genre to challenge the
students.
"A lot of seniors graduated last
year, so I've been working with
quite a few beginners, teaching
fundamentals," lie said
The new choir director will lean
upon his repertoire of musical
tastes to expand the students'
abilities.
"I'm trying to teach them a wide
variety of music," he said, "sort of
like Christmas music, spiritual
styles, baroque music from
different time periods. "Diversified
I think diversity is good
approaching the music 111 dilfercnt
ways "
The choir recently began
preparing for their Christmas
Concert, when the different
varieties of music Schocppach is
installing w ill be fully tested.
"I want to teach them a wide
range of music, so at the Christmas
Concert we will do a spiritual, a
classical piece, a Baroque song and
sonic contemporary tunes," he
said.
Schoeppach said the students'
appear to have accepted the
changes
"There's been a good response,"
he countered "They are working
hard "
Schoeppach believes the students — ,
he has have a bright future Jf
"I liave a very positive opinion of
the students,' he said "In choir.
I'm lucky to work with students
who want to be in choir, so I don't
have the discipline problems that
other teachers might have ."
On his youthful choir's talent
level, he said. "It's developing
They have a lot of potential, but if
tliev work hard they'll achieve
well
These remarks go hand in liand
with his goal "to build up the
choir This year the number of
choir students is down, so I want
to encourage students to join
As a way lo attract students.
Schocppach hopes to institute a
beginners choir and an advanced
choir
The former would be utilized to
advance the students' musical
experiences and growth, while the
latter would be used for experience
and the many choral competitions
"I want to tcach the students that
wonderful results can happen
through hard work and discipline
Also. I want the students to
experience the joy of music "
