A PROMISE MADE...
South Texas Community College (STCC) is the 5()th and new est
community college in the state of Texas. Established September 1.
1993. STCC is the only Texas community college to have been
legislatively mandated. Senate Bill 25 1 .establishing STCC, was signed
into law by former Governor Ann Richardson June 1. 1993.
On August 12.1995,voters in 1 Jidalgo and Starr counties approved the
establishment ofa taxing district to fund the operation ofthe Col lege
and the issuance of$20,000,000 in bonds for the construction of new
facilities.
STCC serves a population of more than 435.000 in its immediate
commuting area. A campus development master plan has been
prepared w hich calls for the expansion ofthe Me A lien campus and
development ofan Industrial Training Center, a M id-Valley Center,
and a Starr County Center.

STCC faculty, staff, and students are reaching out to the communities
which the College serves. Among the projects which have been
undertaken already this school year are the following:
South Texas Community College and St. Joseph the Worker Church
co-sponsored a College Fair in October at the church's parish hall
STCC Admissions, Advisement/Testing, and Financial Aid staff were
present to assist potential students with information and applications.
A group of STCC I n formation Management T echnology students are
assisting with renovations to the computer network at the Texas Youth
Commission's I a ins Regional JuvenileCenter in Fdinburg. ()ldwiring
is being replaced, network cable has been laid, network cards hav ebeen
installed, computer stations have been configured and programs
installed.
STCC biology students also joined officials from the Santa Ana
National Wildlife Refuge ineeiebrating Rio Day on October 2 1. The
event commemorated reforestation efforts along the Rio( irande Valley
Wildlife Corridor and provided faculty and students the opportunity to
plant seedlings.
