STUDY CLUB SPOOKTACULAR- The October meeting of the Florence J. Scott
Study Club was held in the decorated-for-Halloween home of Adelina Villarreal, with
Bitsy Margo serving as co-hostess. Members are shown posing with Mr. Scarecrow
following the business meeting, presided over by Olga Gonzalez, president. Guest
Thelma Molina took the picture. Frances Garza gave the devotional, "Creative
Love." Bitsy Margo presented a program entitled "True Colors." The members and
guest discovered whether they are adventurous orange, responsible gold, harmonious
blue, or curious green and how to use their personal characteristics to greatest
advantage in learning situations and personal relationships.

The Sandoval family has
expressed deep thanks to local
citizens for their support and help
in the aftermath of a fire that
devastated their home on the
afternoon of Oct. 19.
Celia Sandoval wrote the
following open letter to The Rio
Grande Herald on behalf of the
Sandoval family, which resides at
601 West Circle, Apt. 12B, Rio
Grande City, Texas 78582:
"I would like to take this
opportunity to express my most
sincere thanks to the many persons,
companies and organizations that
assisted my family during the recent
loss of our home due to fire. I am
especially grateful to Fire Chief
Javier Garcia and the Fire
Department, Ms. Sylvia Montalvo
and the Red Cross, Roque Guerra
Elementary School staff and
students, the Community Action
Council of South Texas, the Starr
County Housing Authority, and
others who came to our assistance.
"On Oct. 19, 1995 at 2:10 p.m.,
the Rio Grande City Fire
Department answered a fire call
which took them to 607 N. Corpus
Christi, the residence occupicd by
my five children and I. The event
that my family experienced on that
Thursday afternoon was very
traumatic. However, we are grateful
that there was no loss of life or
serious injury. We are also thankful
for the immediate support that
residents of Rio Grande City gave
-■,-ra
my family.
"On that very same day that we
experienced our loss, my family
received donations of clothing.
Soon after that we were assisted
with food and other items. My
family will never forget the
generosity that so many good
people demonstrated toward a
family in need. 1 am sure that
everyone's kindness will be
rewarded many times over through
blessings from God.
"On behalf of myself (Celia
Sandoval) and my children
(Evaristo, Jr., Janette, Jazette,
Virgilio and Sergio, thank you for
all your help. 1 hope that your
Thanksgiving holiday was special
and that your Christmas holidays
will be blessed with good health
and happiness."
The Baptist mission in La Grulla
officially became an autonomous
church on Sunday afternoon, Dec. 3
after being a mission of First
Baptist Church in Rio Grande City
for close to 21 years.
The mission was officially
constituted as Primera Iglcsia
Bautista of La Grulla in a service
that began at 2:30 p.m. on Dec. 3.
Leaders of First Baptist Church in
Rio Grande City and the Rio
Grande Valley Baptist Association
were on hand for the service.
Abiel Sifuentes, pastor of the
mission, led off the service by
recalling that three young girls were
present for the mission's first
Sunday School roughly 21 years
ago. He noted that Bible studies
were begun in homes. He indicated
that as time moved on, the mission
began to realize solid growth.
Sifuentes said, "We thank God
that we are debt-free on everything.
We thank God for the people that
come to hear the gospel in this
May you be filled with the light
and love of the season.
We hope to see you in 1996.

many years of hard work."
Using John 10:10 as his text,
Johnson discussed the purpose of
establishing churches. He declared
that the church's purpose "is to
reach the many lost persons of all
ages."
Johnson noted that many serious
problems are plaguing today's
generation of young people. He
stressed the importance of
ministering to people in prison.
Johnson emphasized that the
Grulla church lias already had many
years of productive and fruitful
ministry. He indicated that there are
122 churches in the Rio Grande
Valley Baptist Association, which
covers Starr, Hidalgo, Cameron and
Willacy Counties.
Sifuentes said, "We are thankful
to God for this day." A member of
the Grulla mission offered a motion
that the mission officially organize
as a full-Hedged autonomous church
and the motion was unanimously
approved.
David Flores, chairman of
deacons at First Baptist-Rio Grande
City, led the business session. He
said, "We're happy that you're now
a full-fledged church."
Roland Ouellette, pastor of First
Baptist Church, emphasized, "I've
had the pleasure of working with
Abiel and all the church members
here. We've prayed a lot about this
day."
