Washington. March I. If a' farmer
Is eo fortunate aa to have a net Income
of over $3.000 a year in cat ho la a
bachelor or $4.000 If married ho Is
subject to the Income tax and under
the law each Individual moat make
return to the Internal revenue col-
lector of his district on or before 'the
first day of March If ha has a net
Income of $3.000 or over ($2600 for
the ten months or Kit). While the
interest of moat farmers In this sub-
ject Is purely academic the depart-

Income Dlffk-olt to Compote.
The Income tax law of October 2
1811 places a tax of 1 per cant apon
all net Incomes of over $3000. with
an additional tax on incomes of
$20600 or more. The first question
nrlalng In the minds of moat people
Is what constitutes a net income. For
a man receiving a recular salary or a
business man with a good system of
bookkeeping it Is easy to determine
Whether or not bis Income Is taxable.
But for the farmer who receives no
stated income and who often falls to
keep accurate account of receipts and
expenditures. It la more difficult to
calculate hla net Income.
In order that farmer may be post-
ed On the income tax aa It may con-
cern them the following Information
has been furnished by the Internal
revenue bureau of the treasury de-
partment :
In general an Income consists of
amounts derived from salaries wages
or compensation for personal service
paid In any form; also from profes-
sions business sales or dealings In
wroperty" or from rents Interest on
bonds or mortgages dividends on
stocks or other Income from Invest
ments. These Items constitute gross
Income from which there should be
deducted the cxnenses of carrying on
the business; Interest paid on Indebt
edness; worthless debts charged off
loaaea by fire storm or ahlpwreck not
covered by Insurance; exhaustion
wear and tear of property and any
Income upon which the tmome tax
has already been deducted at the
source ns for instance dividends on
the stock of a corporation which has
already paid the tax on its earnings.
Exemption for Married Couples.
The provisions regarding net In
comes of $3000 apply only to unmar

income amounts to $4000 the total

In Alamogordo and vicinity during tha

Present indications are that the
demonstration well which George Carl
Is drilling for the Alamogordo Im-
provement company at the upper and
of Alameda park will be one of the
best producers in this valley. The Well
la now ninety feet deep and contains
seventy feet oj water. Tha first
stratum has not yet been opened tip.
It Is thought to be an exceptionally
fine well when the water from the
first stratum will rise to within twenty
feet of the surface. The well wilt be
carried to depth of 200 feet and
through the use of screened casing all
three of the strata of water Will he
used. This will ought to be good
for at least 1000 gallons a minóte. It
