Football's future in the UD
sports lineup is pending, awaiting
the results of a committee report
to the Board of Trustees.
The committee, composed
of faculty, staff and students,
has been assigned the task of
assessing the pros and cons of
adding football to UD's list of
intercollegiate sports.
Dick Strockbine, athletic
director and committee member,
cautioned that the recent meetings
are merely exploratory and not a
sign that the sport will definitely
appear at the school.
"There are a lot of concerns
about football and worries about
it being too big," he said.

In anything we do I
would like to think that
people have an open
mind about it. Many
great schools have
football teams-Brown,
Amherst, Duke-and it
hasn't harmed their
academic life.

the issue, Strockbine said the UD
community needs to approach
the issue impartially, despite
concerns over possible academic
deterioration.
"In anything we do I would
like to think that people have an
open mind about it. Many great
schools have football teams-
Brown, Amherst, Duke-and it
hasn't harmed their academic
life," Strockbine said.
The role of the committee, as
explained by Strockbine, is to
research the issue and then present
its findings to President Joseph,
who will then decide whether
or not to present the findings of
the study at the trustees February
meeting on student life.
Dr. Tom Jodziewicz, chairman
of the history department and
committee member,
assessed the group's
purpose as a
consideration of the
various questions
involved in having a
football team.
"We need to be
careful about being
premature. We need
to have an internal
committee under-
standing of what we
are about, the questions
we need to ask and
the direction we need
to take," Jodziewicz said. '"We
have really just started to focus
our attention on the questions
surrounding the introduction of
football to the school."
He also emphasized that this
did not mean the community
would not be involved.
"I have no sense that this is
not going to be a community
enterprise. It's rather obvious
that there should be academic
forums about football and that
intercollegiate sports should be
brought that kind of attention,"
he said.
While Jodziewicz acknow-
ledged the many different
responsesto the study-positive,
negative and impartial-he advised
that the study is still in the
preliminary stages.
"There are two broad issues
involved in discussing football:
financial and academic. But
football is also a way of creating
more opportunities and facilities
for the whole community," he
said
Both Jodiewicz and Strockbine
agreed one of the practical
concerns motivating the research
is the male/female ratio.
"Certainly it has been agreed on,
more than once, that a motivating
factor in adding football has been
to attract more males and increase
the student body population"
