Burk assumes new position
as Constantin associate dean
Lincy George
News Editor
Dr. Kathleen Burk has replaced
Dr. Claudia McMillan as associate
dean of Constantin College.
McMillan left the university
May 31 to work on a book.
"I felt compelled to get started
On my book. I am expanding
my dissertation into a volume
of criticism on Faulkner's last
novel, The Reiversshe said.
When McMillan was
hired as associate dean of
Constantin College, the
position was newly created.
"Really my job at UD was never
intended as my career. I was hired
to reorganize the office. That's
what we did. When I came into
it, it was a new position," she said.
Though she values the time
she spent as student and faculty
member at the University of
Dallas, McMillan has not planned
specifically to return to UD.
"I am not planning it [returning
to UD]. I love UD. I love the
students. I am grateful to UD for
the experience that I had on both
sides of the desk. I just wish the
best for the university under the
leadership of Dr. Lazarus," she said.
At present, McMillan
has no deadline to complete
and publish her book.
"I am researching still at this
point. I would love to have it
done within a year," she said.
McMillan recommended Burk
to fill the position of associate dean.
"I am very pleased about
Kathleen's taking over the position.
I suggested her to Dr. Doe," she said.
Dr. Frank Doe is the
dean of Constantin College.
Before taking the position
of associate dean in August,
Burk was director of the
philosophy and letters program
at Constantin College. Her
responsibilities were similar to
those of her present job but with
a different group of students.
As director of the philosophy
and letters program, Burk advised
seminary students and directed
their senior projects, among
other responsibilities. Her present
responsibilities include academic

advising and retention of all
freshmen and transfer students.
"I am particularly charged with
incoming students. I evaluate
transcripts of transfer students
and handle other issues," she said.
Though the college dean's
office completed degree plans
for all students in the past, that
responsibility is now shared with
the Career Development Center.
Burk will do degree plans for
freshmen and transfer students.
Dr. Lee Fratantuono, director
of academic counseling, will
advise and assist other students
with degree plans, Burk said.
Describing her first week as
associate dean after students
arrived for the semester, Burk
said, "I never stopped moving."
At present, Burk will continue
to fulfill the responsibilities
of director of the philosophy
and letters program.
Though she misses interacting
with seminary students on a
more frequent basis, Burk
has found new challenges as
assistant dean, Burk said.
"The only thing I miss is not
having the casual interaction
that I had while I was in the
Same building. [The philosophy
and letters program is located
in the Holy Trinity Seminary
Building]. I have already' enjoyed
getting to know the transfer
students and the students I
have interacted with," she said.
Before she began working as
associate dean, Burk said she had
an interesting summer experience.
While at a National Endowment
for the Humanities seminar, she
dissected a pig heart while following
the description written by Galen
(A. D. 129 — 210), a Roman doctor.
"I dissected the porcine
cardio pulmonary system. It
was extraordinary, a tangible
experience, quite unlike anything
I had done in a very long time. It
was a wonderful interdisciplinary
exercise. We were studying a classic
text and doing science," she said.
