Committee on student life streamlines
the judicial appeals process
Monica Diodati
News Editor
The committee on student
life recently approved a
new procedure for the
University of Dallas'
judicial process, especially
the process for more serious
cases such as expulsion and
suspension.
Whereas the old handbook
contained inconsistencies and
confusion, the new procedure is
clearer and more efficient, said
Dr. Dennis Sepper, who was the
chair of the committee for two
years and remains a committee
faculty member.
Three years ago, the student
life office, and other members
of the University community,
began to notice discrepancies
in the handbook concerning
the student judicial process,
and dual-function committees
were not working together. For
instance, if one group does an
original hearing and the same
group handles an appeal, it can
lead to questions of fairness,
Sepper said.
"No one had paid attention to
whether it had been consistent
with other documents," said
Sepper.
The original plan in April
2008 was for the entire senate
to revise the procedures line by
line. But, Sepper said, "You can't
revise anything with 20 different
people adding their two bits."
So the committee on student
life was formed with Sepper as
the chair, and included only nine
people. Together, they responded
to the complaints from the UD
attorneys and staff members and
added more options to thejudicial
procedures. With more options,
however, comes confusion, said
Sepper.
This version, which was
finalized in January 2009, is what
the University currently uses for
its judicial procedures.
When the attorneys reviewed
the revised documents, they did
not like its confusing character
and the committee was asked
to make further changes to help
clarify the University's process
Sepper said, however, that the
second revision, submitted in
April 2010, was not approved
because UD was getting a new
dean of student life, Dean Joe
Cassidy, and it was decided
that the approval should wait
until Cassidy saw the revised
documents.
"The unfortunate side of
that," said Sepper, "was the
dissatisfaction continued for
another year."
The changes, however, have
finally been made and mostly
concern the committee on student
discipline, the committee which
hears student appeals in cases
of expulsion and suspension.
The committee of student life, of
which Sepper is a part, is only an
advisory body and does not get
directly involved in the judicial
process.
"We were trying to more
carefully define the role of the
committee on student discipline"
said Sepper, since it was
confusing and led to issues of
fairness in the past.
Madison Milliken, SG president
and member of the committee of
student life, commented that the
new procedure is more efficient
and leaves less room for error,
although, "There aren't any big
controversial changes," he said.
Sepper also said that the
average student would not feel
any change in procedure, as
the revisions mostly occured
in the formal levels of the
judicial process, with appeals
made against expulsion and
suspension. Informal student
life procedures will continue to
operate in the same way.
Sepper said that the changes,
while subtle, serve the purpose
of reinforcing that student life is
not all about discipline, "but the
procedures are there if and when
they are needed."
"It has been a very
complicated procedure to get to
a less complicated procedure,"
said Sepper. But now, "We have a
system that is fair."
Letter from
the editor
The University News and I go way
back. Four long - yet short - years ago,
I started working for the paper. Back
then, my job title was Layout Designer.
My duties consisted of scouring the
Internet for graphics to accompany
the movie reviews and occasionally
designing a page or two. Between then
and now, I've done everything from
write to shoot photos to edit.
Those closest to me know that I
consider each issue of the News to be
my "baby," and for this reason, it's very
bittersweet for me to be writing this
letter on the eve of publishing my last
issue with the News ever.
Here are a fewthings I'll miss about
the News:
Saying and hearing the slightly
delirious things that come out of
my mouth around post-midnight on
Mondays in the newsroom.
Feeling the rush of seeing a week's
worth of work hit the newsstands on
Tuesdays.
Talking to people from around
the University whom I probably never
would have met otherwise.
Witnessing the hard work put in by
my editors and writers.
Having the support of an absolutely
amazing production staff that puts up
with my demands, calls me out on my
mistakes and just demonstrates a hard-
working dedication week after week.
Hearing from readers how the
paper taught them something, gave
them pause or just brightened their
day.
But the time has rightfully come for
my departure, and as I go, I take these
and many other good memories with
me.
Special thanks also to Ray
Wilkerson, journalism professor,
newspaper/yearbook advisor, mentor
and friend, who is always in the thick
of it with us on Mondays. He's given
us more guidance and encouragement
and shared with us more wisdom
from his many years of journalism
experience than words can express.
And so, with a tear in my eye and
a smile on my face, I take my leave as
your Managing Editor, UD. It's been an
honor to serve you.
