DM] Fellow Texan:
With tin- Russian Communists
threatening to stir up new trouble!
in Berlin and elsewhere around tile
world, the job of keeping Amt ica -
guard high continues to be one oi
our gravest problems. Almost all
of us agree that we must keep out'
nation so sHwig tlmt the Com-
munists will never dare attack us.
But ev-.'i atnon^ America's {op-
ranking military men, there's a
wide difference of opinion as to
whether we should build more tnis-
niles. mote of a certain 'ypt of
bombers, more submarines, or .just
what we should build next.

bomber^ built in For* Worth. Tex-
as. reach speeds of over 1.300 miles
per ho;]!-. And many of our author-
ities believe that they will match
any such new bombers that Rus-
sians have developed.
Yet because of a difference of
opinion among the miii'ary leaders
ever whether we need more mis-
siles or manned bombers faster,
an order has been given to stop
production of the B-*)8.
I have strongly opposed this
move to quit building new H-5Ps
f< r several reasons. Firs'., many
ell-informed military and civilian
defense leader-. strongly doubt the
w'sdom of stopping B-53 produc-
tion. Where there is such a wide
difference of opinion among the
defense experts, the safest thing
to do is to continue the program
until the best course is clear and
unequivocal. If the program is
has'dly stopped now, and then it is
decided later that it should be
started again, it will cost the tax-
payers hundred^ of millions oi
dollar- to resume the B-58 pro-
duction and it would take two or
'hrcu years to do it because the
great technical force of top-flight
engineers, technicians and other
) specialized personnel now as-
sembled in Fort Worth will he
scattered to the four comers of
this urea'; nation. The B-58 is the
only manned bomber that flies
faster than sound tlmt is being
built in the entire Free World. It
flies abou' 2' ^ times as fast as
sound travels.
If we stop the B-58 program as
currently planned, it will be a
hard blow to employment and'
business in the entire North Tex-
as area. Some 17,000 workers
would be without jobs by the end
of next year, if B-58 production in
Fort Worth is stopped The weekly

Another extremely impertaii
reason, the most important factor',
tenth. in continuing the super- j
sonic H-58 program is 'ha' they !
could help safeguard against "ac- j
cidental " atomic war. In answering !
a mis-ale alert, one moment of j
decision may well decide whether
we are plunged into an atomic in- i
