-ro ARTL! ES Spring 2002 5 C l~to take him to your favorite art museum
where would you go?
AM: I would definitely take him to my
own [the El Paso Museum of Art]
because I know it best. It came out of
where I grew up, comes from who I am.
Tom Lea-my great granddad baptized
him! I love our museum for combining
that rootedness with what's new. It has a
strong contemporary collection yet it has
this very strong regional collection that
gives you a sense of where you are. I like
that idea. Being green and always grow-
ing, but being rooted. It's easy to become
like a tumbleweed, you know.
RSC: You are so busy. How do you manage
all these different responsibilities?
AM: I'm happily busy. I hope I don't act
frazzled. I probably do. I feel lucky
because I've been influenced by people
like Tom Lea. Even when he was blind,
life was a miracle to him. I hope I've
become more that way. And I'm lucky to
have wonderful help. I gave up cooking
twenty years ago, and Isaac is so good at
running the gallery. I think we hold on to
things when other people could do themfor us or help us. I have all the time
I need. It's a matter of prioritizing. I just
focus on the work I'm doing where I am.
Tom Lea helped teach me that. There
was this whole idea of success in the 20th
century where there were so many art
stars, but Tom Lea was never known by
the art world. He always said his friends
bought his paintings. And they weren't all
in El Paso. He said, "The paintings are a
personal conversation between me and
my friends." What's better than that?
RSC: How long will you serve as chairwoman
of this committee?
AM: This appointment is for his tenure, at
least his first term. I guess I'll be reap-
pointed. Or not. I might like to do some-
thing else. [She is laughing again.] I don't
know. This will be a perfect thing. I can
go up and see my friend Laura, and do
things that I think contribute, but still
live in my house in El Paso.
