The following article taken from the Fan-

to the public growth til River county,
of adopting some more energfitip way af }iji.
proving our own roads and bridges. Last
winter proved the necessity of doing some-
thing. was pressing. Thousands of dollars
:>f damage to wagons and animals and the
extra labor jieceesary to take cotton to mar-
ket, costing much uinte, also the low price
obtained for cotton that had to ii£ gjJ/d in
a stained condition, all this loss is dfte to
our impassable winter rOads :|
"The question of good roads and bridges
iu I'ai.iiUi county is a serious one, and de~
mauds tj^e ^ttpi/Jion of our people and coun-
ty authorities. Funuijf .county has a popu-
lation of aliout So,000, and the iu^ip farming
term, aud to-day their draft for one hun-
dred thousand dollars, would be honored
and paid on Wall street New York. How-
has this radical change iu their financial
condition been brought about.' Has it
been done by honest dealing aud the uat-
ural increaM! ol the cattle in which tiny
have invested their money, or has it been
done illegitimately t We say it has been
done iu the foimer way and why f Let
the followiug instance confirm uui posi-
tion. In 1877 a geutleuiaii then living
iu Red River couuty, Texas, bought .300
head ot stock cattle, drove them west of
fort Worth, located them on a good
ranch. The land npon which his cattle
grazed did not belong to him. He gave
his cattle careful atteutiou, marking and
branding the calves aud keeping his cat-
tle well rounded up< In 1881 aud alter
the Texas & l'aciiic Railway Company
had extended its road west from Fort
Worth he sold his 500 head ot cattle
and their uatuial increase lor the sum ot
twenty thousaud dollars cash.
He then invested tit'teen thousand dol-
lars in one thousand cows and calves,
moved still further west bought Durham
bulls, aud thereby improved the grade of
his cattle, aud to-day has as tiue a herd
ot half-breed native Texas cattle as can
be found in any country, and we are told
that he has recently refused one huudred
aud fifty thousaud dollars toi them.
These are tacts, aud the man is a Red
River county boy, W. 11. Moore a sou ol
Bart Moore, who is well kuowu in this
county. It is sai l that the day tor cat-
tle raising in Red River couuty has pass-
ed. We deny the fact. We have thous-
ands of acres ot laud iu this couuty cov-
ered by line grass aud tiue cane, which
can be bought for a lueic nominal price,
and if practical stock men will take hold
of these lands which are to be found ou
Shawnee and Blossom prai'ies, it may
uot be that as large fortunes as Mi.
Moore has made can be accumulated,
but most assuredly cattle raising in a
county, with good water and good grass
cau certainly be made profitable. Time
will uot allow us to give this *ubject fur-
ther attention at this time, but by per-
mission we .will write you again, ami
show how men cau pay five dollars (>er
acre for Red River couuty laud, leuce it
for pastures, pay the present price for
cattle, and make 25 per cent, per annum
ou the money, after pacing all expenses
and 10 per cent, interest.
