THE BASTROP ADVERTISER, BASTROP, TEXAS
Farmers Urged To
Use Fertilizers
COLLEGE STATION, Texan—Fer-
tilizer* used on adapted soils, will
make Texas' best "pay crop"—cot-
ton—pay more in 1946, says the
War Cotton Production Committee of
Texas in a statement urging wider
use of fertilisers 0:1 cotton thier sea-
son.
"Experience and experiments prove
that use of fertilizers, in accordance
with recommendations of the Texas
Agricultural Experiment Station and
Extension Service, is highly profit
able to cotton growers at present
prices of cotton and seed," says E.
A. Miller Extension agronomist.
"They offer one of our best oppor-
tunities to increase the relatively low
average yield of cotton in the eastern
part of Texas."
Miller said he had supplied Coun-
ty Agents with authoritative infor-
mation as to the fertilizers be-t suit-
ed to their local needs General recom-
mendations of the Texas Fertiliser
Committee for cotton fertilizers are:
Sandy loam soils; ."HMI to 400
pounds per acre of f>-10-5, 4-12-4 or
6-8-4 fertilizer.

to 400 pounds per acre of 4-10-0

Feb. 7 Designated
National Social
Hygiene Day
AUSTIN. Texan.—National Social
Hygiene Day will be observed on
Wednesday, February 7, und in Tex-
as, according to Dr. Geo. W. Cox,
j State Health Officer, all local health
agencies are planning to parucip&te.
Throughout the past year the Tex-
as State Department of Health has
carried on a large-scale persist net
and effective campaign against syph-
ilis and gonorrhea, the venereal dis-
ease enemies of national health.
These campaigns, Dr. Cox declar-
ed, have helped to keep venereal dis-
ease infections from spreading and
have played a major part in aiding
servicemen and civilian industrial
workers to stay on the job. In fact,
man-days lost through such infec-
tions, in the armed forces and in
industry, have been brought to an all
time low and Texas can list this
gratifying result among its contribu-
tions to the nation's military and
imlu--trial achievements.

"Even though medical science has
produced new drugs and medical re-
search has found new methods to
combat these diseases," Dr. Cox stat-
ed. "they are still formidable ene-
mies. Fortunately, we now have fa-
cilities available for diagnosis and
tieatment of venereal diseases for j
all ritizet s of Texas who cannot af- j
ford private care."
Through new awareness among
community and health leaders and j
law enforcement authorities, there
ha- been tremendous progress made
in the control of venereal diseases
in Texas, but it must be remember-
ed that in our democracy a com-
munit) will have no better control
of venereal di*ea?es and the repres-
sion of prostitution, than the citi-
zens of that community want and
are willing to support.
"l/et us make Wednesday. Febru-
ary 7, V Hay in the war on venereal
diseases," lh ("ox urged. "It can be
done if we wat.t it done badly
enough."

Wage Statements
Not Complete
AUSTIN, Jan. 31.—Wage state-
ments requested from the Social Se-
curity Hoard hy individuals for an-
ticipated use in making out income
tax returns are not complete for the
last quarter of 1944 and therefore,
cannot he used for income tax pur-
poses, said David S. Pruitt, manager
of the Austin Social Security Board
field office.
It was explained that any state-
ment of such wages from this source
would not include the latent report
of earnings made to the collectors of
internal revenue covering the last
quarter in 1944, because of the time
involved in posting such data to the
records.
Pruitt said that several inquiries
had heen received regarding this mat-
ter owing to the fact that the time
has arrived for considering payment
of income taxes for last year. Any-
one desiring to secure a statement
of his wajres for income tax pur-
poses can expect to receive from his
employer on or before January 31, •
W-2 report including this informa-
tion.
