Upstream Dams
Not To Affect
Water Yield
H N Smith. State Con&erva
tionist for Texas, today declar
ed municipal and industrial us-
ers of water have no cause to
worry in conection with the eva
poration of water from the small
reservoirs- ir Soil Conservation
Service upstream flood preven-
tion.
Mr Smith pointed out that the
40 fl K.d prevention dams already-
built in th< Trinity River W'a
terahed are preventing many
thousand c.f dollars of flo< d
losses every year alonj.' the small
creeks where the dam- have
been built. In addition, farm
ers <ar. n«'W raise crops on sex-
era! thousand acres of fertile
bottomlanc which have been
flooded toe frequently for cul
tivation.
Smith exfnair; -d thai critics
have said that if flood proven
tion dams arc nuilt in the head
waters of streams the water
supplies may be seriously reduc-
ed by evaporation from the pools
of the structure*. Actually, Mr.
Smith -aid, the evaporation lots
from the pools of upstream flood
prevention dams would be small
compared to tr.c evaporation loss
from existing major reservoirs,
arid very 'mall compared to the
average flow of the streams.
The aw rag< yearly flow into
Benbrook, Grapevine, Garza
Fittle Flm and Fa von reiervcurr
is estimated t/i be slightly more
than one million acre feet. The
net amount of water evaporated
annually from the conservation
pools of these reservoirs is es-
timated te total l.'ll acre-
feet, or 12> percent of the- aver
age yearly j- flow. Mr. Smith
estimated tfiat the similar loss
from the pools of all flood pre
ventiori darr.i built, under con
struction and proposed— up
stream frorr tie four major
dams, wouid M only Ft,700 a< re
feet annually, or 1.3 percent of
the average inflow.
In additior u the anr>ual
floo«l daniage • pre-vented if up
stream area*, tne flood preven-
tion dams will reduce the rate
«>f lwlirne ntatior of the major
reservoirs by more than 50 per
rent. It is obvious, said Mr.
Smith, that tne tombine-d bene
fits of Uii upstream dams far
outwetgf, ar> •r-ia'i effect which
Uie-y niay have or. the water
i upply.
