Let all try thi- coining .-.um-
mer to be more careful when
out in Ixiats. There are a few
very simple and ea.y rules to
follow in boating that might be
the big factor in preventing a
drowning here in Bastrop Coun-
ty this coming year.
Number one on the list, when
you and your budtry start down
the river to spend the night,
don't overload the boat. If it
j- necessary, make two trips.
There are numerous drownings
every year that are caused by-
people overloading their boats.
La-t summer I saw boats come
and go from the boat docks that
were loaded like freight trains.
Another rule of safe boating
i:- not to overpower your boat.
When a motor that has too much
horse power for the size of the
boat it is on is cranked and
full throttle thrown to it you
are liable to end up sitting on
the bottom of the river. When
all the power hits a small boat
all it can do is rear up and
swamp. So don't over power
your boat. Nearly all you read-
er have been raised here on
the Colorado and konw more a-
bout it than I do, but I do know
regardless of how well you know
a stream and how long you have

been boating, you can ?till
drown. When summer come-
and we all hit the river, lets ap
ply a little common sense and
all be here for years to come.
Life preservers are a very
cheap item and are manufactur-
ed for the purpose of saving
lives in water, so I would cer-
tainly recommend purchasing
-everal and placing them in the
boat and when running the river
slip them on, it could mean the
difference in saving a life, your
life, and that is the important
