report to Polk
This summer's last two-week
session of annual Field Training
for Army Reserve units began
last weekend as engineer units
from the VIII Army Reserve
Corps arrive at Fort Polk, I ui-
siana, with an expected aggre-
gate strength of almost 2,000 men.
All the arriving units will be
assigned to the 120th Engineer
Brigade, commanded by Briga-
dier General Clifford M. Sim-
mang. wlvo in civilian life is Dr.
Simmang, professor and Depart-
ment of Engineering head at Tex-
as A&M University.
The S71 st Engineer Battalion
will bring approximately f)00 men.
Their headquarters and four let-
tered companies are commanded
by Lieutenant Colonel Nelson R
Simpson of Bastrop.
The men will spend a week in
the field conducting tactical field
maneuvers and will spend the
second week in construction pro
grams.

Liglil-a-Bike
A special bicycle safety pro-
gram will be sponsored for Bas-
trop youngsters by the Ernest
Bartsch VFW Post 2527 on Sun-
! day, August 30.
The Light-a-Bike plan will help
motorists spil youngsters riding
along the streets after dark.
Members of the local VFW will
assist in placing strips of reflec-
tive tiijie on bicycles from 3 un-
til 5 p. m.
Kids are asked to bring their
bike.s to the Advertiser office dur-
ing those Sunday afternoon hours
to uet their free reflectors.
