Cathedral of Hope surprised Tim
Seelig, artistic director of the Turtle
Creek Chorale, with the church's
Heroes of Hope award last Sunday.
On Sunday, the church will present
an identical award to the Rev. Cecil
Williams, a Methodist minister from
San Francisco.
Cathedral of Hope began presenting
the Heroes of Hope award in the
1990s to recognize those who have
taken courageous stands for the rights
of all people, including GLBT people,
church representatives said.

Coming Out Project
By David Webb Staff Writer
The theme for the 2006 Fruit Bowl
will be tropical, and should be more
accessible for participants than last
year's fairytale concept, a coordinator
said.
Jonathan Boarman, co-chair of the
Dallas-Fort Worth Coming Out
Project, said coordinators expect the
bowlers and spectators will enjoy
dressing up in tropical attire for
Sunday's event.
,s'We thought it was something tun,"
Boarman said. "It's always a stretch to
come up with something new and
innovative."
Boarman said the tropical theme
would be simpler for the participants.
"It's more difficult for a fairy tale
theme because not everyone can show
up in wings," Boarman said. "There's
more variety with a tropical theme."
Co-chair Alan Reynolds said

Politicans, neighborhood
leaders back nonviolence
project in Mt. Auburn
By David Webb Staff Writer
Mike LoVuolo has a vision for his
Mt. Auburn neighborhood in East
Dallas — one that's free of the sound
of gunfire.
LoVuolo, who is vice president of
the Mt. Auburn Neighborhood
Association and a board member of
Stonewall Democrats of Dallas,
brought neighborhood residents, polit-
ical officials, Democratic candidates
and Dallas police and fire safety offi-
cers together on Saturday for a summit
on non-violence. A crowd gathered in
the parking lot of Iglesia de Dios
Church on Parkview Avenue to hear
LoVuolo's plans for a gun buyback
program and to listen to civil rights
leaders speak.
The event also featured a voter reg-
istration table.

human rights activist, so I'm very

atmosphere that has made Fruit Bowl
such a fun local tradition," Reynolds
said.
Boarman said he plans to be in cos-
tume, but he is unsure how he will
dress.
"We'll have to see what happens,"
Boarman said. "If I can run around
and volunteer in a grass skirt, that
might happen."
The event that benefits the Dallas-
Fort Worth Coming Out Project will
be held at USA Bowl on Sunday at 2
p.m.
When the Fruit Bowl ends at 5 p.m.,
the party will continue with a Tropical
Escape after-party at the Tin Room.
There will be no admission charge to
the after-party.
Jay Brown, a spokesman for the
Human Right Campaign, said the
Fruit Bowl is a unique way for a city's
GLBT residents to support their par-
ticipation in the national group's
Coming Out Project.
"This is the only event in the nation
that supports the Coming Out Project
activities at the lane," Brown said.
The local group began sponsorship
of the Fruit Bowl in 2001.

Singer, dancer who shot to fame in 'West Side Story'
to perform at fundraiser benefiting terminally ill people
By David Webb Staff Writer
Acclaimed singer, dancer and
actress Chita Rivera will headline the
Disciple of Trinity's benefit gala at the
Adams Mark Hotel on Sept. 9.
Jim Davis, executive director of the
charitable group that benefits termi-
nally ill people, said the group is
eagerly awaiting Rivera's perform-
ance.
"Everyone is very excited about it,"
Davis said. "We mention the name
Chita Rivera and people say, 'Oh
you're kidding.'"
Davis said Rivera is popular with a
broad group of people.
"It is quite a coup for us to have
someone so multi-talented, who has
starred in so many different musicals
and shows and movies, that we're just
real happy," Davis said.
Davis, whose group operates DOT
Consignment Shop in East Dallas,
began trying to book Rivera after see-
ing her perform in New York in "The
Dancer's Life" in January, he said.
The musical was a composite of her
life as an entertainer.
