The Order Of Service
By 1963, Mr. Walker's retirement years took him back to
his love of rural Texas, and he and his wife, Massaree, began
spending much of their time in producing livestock, raising
chickens, and growing fruits and vegetables on the family farms
in Sweet Home Community. Both were reared in this
community and maintained a lifelong love of the land, its
people, and values. They never lost the passion for "going
down home".
Mr. Walker was a great provider for his family, a dedicated
husband and strong father. He encouraged all his children to
seek lofty goals, aim high, and diversify their learning. He
would often tell them to learn how to do many different things
in order that they might always have a means of being self-
supporting. He also insisted on treating others kindly and fairly.
On October 23, 2005, Mr. Walker went to his final home to
receive his robe and crown (and to sit back and tell his
"stories"). He was truly a "Gentle Spirit"!
He leaves to mourn his passing, three daughters, Mrs.
Minnie W. Collins; Mrs. Massaree W. (Charles) Brown (Teaneck,
New jersey); Dr. Joan Hartfield Duncan (Dr. Walter J.); and a
son, Mr. Charles E. Hartfield; eight grandchildren, Mr. Clarence
"Cory" Collins (San Antonio); Ms. Massaree Elisabeth Brown
(Teaneck, New Jersey); Mr. Charles-Emerson Brown (Teaneck,
New Jersey); Charlann Marie Hartfield (Kent, Washington) and
Gabriel Charles Hartfield (North Dakota); Mrs. Lynda (Delbert)
Hall; Mr. Walter Joe (Iralda) Duncan, Jr. (Paterson, New Jersey);
Ms. Lisa Gayle Duncan (New York); four great-grandchildren,
Ms. Krystal Lynne Duncan; Courtland Lewan Hall, Delbert Isiah
Hall and Mikayla Corazon Duncan (New Jersey); one brother,
Mr. Langston Walker (Portland, Oregon); an aunt, Mrs. Tina
Sheeley; a brother-in-law, Mr. Henry J. Singletary (Seattle,
Washington); a sister-in-law, Mrs. Mattie Walker, and a host of
nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
