The state legislature created Guadalupe County March 30, 1846,
from parts of Bexar and Gonzales counties and the old DeWitt
colony. Formal organization of the county took place the following
August, with Seguin designated as the county seat.
Many hundreds of immigrants settled in the county during
these early years, mostly from the southern states, especially
Tennessee, Kentucky, Maryland, Mississippi, Louisiana, and Virginia.
These people brought with them many of the traditions and
customs of the Old South. Immigrants from Germany entered the
area between 1847 and 1860, and again between 1870 and 1890, settling
in the north and west regions of the county. The population
of Guadalupe County in 1860 was 5,444.
During the Civil War years, the citizens of Guadalupe County.
were involved in attempts to provide support for the Confederacy.
The commissioners court organized and paid for transportation of
troops and provided for aid to citizens of Galveston who were
evacuated under threat of bombardment. The women of the county
made cloth for uniforms and other articles of clothing out of
cotton. The problems of war, and especially of the subsequent
Reconstruction period, gradually destroyed the prosperity of the
pre-war years to such an extent that a special tax was needed to
defray the county's indebtedness.
The end of Reconstruction marked the beginning of a new era
of prosperity in Guadalupe County. Flour mills, saw mills, and
gristmills were established on the Guadalupe River. By 1944 there
were five hydro-electric power plants also in operation on the
river. The Galveston, Harrisburg, and San Antonio Railway reached
