Relay for Life activities generate cancer awareness
The Relay For Life for
Bastrop/Smithville is only a week
away. On May 16 at 5 p.m., relay-
ers and attendees will arrive at
Erhard Field in Bastrop, and most
will stay until 8 a.m. the next
morning for the closing cere-
monies.
The American Cancer Society
Relay For Life celebrates the lives
of hundreds of local residents who
have survived cancer, while offer-
ing hope of finding a cure. To
honor the courage of cancer sur-
vivors, area survivors are invited
to a dinner at 5:30 p.m. in the ninth
grade annex before the ceremonies
begin.
"Also to celebrate lives is the
Wall of Life, created to honor
every survivor who has participat-
ed in our Relay For Life," said
Cynthia Dickson,
Bastrop/Smithville event chair.
"Today, 50 percent of all cancer
patients are being cured and 40
percent are in remission. Today,
we are living with cancer, not
dying of cancer. The purpose of
Relay For Life is to celebrate sur-
vivorship. Please visit our Wall of
Life in honor of our survivors."
Other honorees at the event will
be those who lost their battle with
the disease and the people who
cared for them.
The Relay For Life event is an
all-night community event bring-
ing together teams of families,
friends, churches, neighborhoods
and businesses - all with the same
goal of curing cancer. Teams of
walkers keep a continuous pres-
ence on the track throughout the
night, walking in shifts to raise
funds for the American Cancer
Society. The Relay For Life com-
mittee has planned many activities
during the night as people relay.
Dollars raised through Relay
For Life help support ACS's
research, education, advocacy and
patient services. Relay For Life
also helps maintain the ACS toll-
free 24-hour cancer information
line, 1-800-ACS-2345 and web-
site, www.cancer.org.

the event, contact Dickson at (512)
