State in criminal cases instituted in the county court and other inferior
courts within the county 12 and performs other ariiportant duties.-13
VIII. SHERIFF
A sheriff was among the group of officers composing Caldwell County's
first governmental organization. The office has had uninterrupted existence
since the organization of the county in 1848.15 The sheriff is
the county's chief conservator of the peacel6 and process officer, the
custodian of the jail,13 and, subject to certain powers of the cormmissioners
court, of the courthouse.19 He is elected from the county at large,
for a term of 2 years.20
The sheriff's records are in his office.
