Cats run by Greyhounds in regular season finale
By Jason Turner
Canadian (9-1) closed its regular season
Friday night in Graver, dominating the Grey-
hounds en route to a 60-26 victory. The Wild-
cats rushed for 289 yards and totaled 475
yards of offense. Canadian claims the second
spot in District 1-1A and has a bye week be-
fore facing Wellington or Boys Ranch next
week.
Dylan Weaver ran for 170 yards on 15
carries and rushed for three scores. He also
caught 4 passes for 42, returned an intercep-
tion 70-yards for a touchdown and kicked five
extra points. Weaver scored 29 points while
Graver (3-6) managed only 23 as a team.
Weaver has totaled 124 points this season to
lead Canadian. Alex Reyes and Clay Cockrell
are tied for second with 75.
"I think particularly last Friday night
[Weaver] had a banner game," Lynch said.
"He scored on defense and Clay [Cockrell]
didn't play which gave him more touches [on
offense]."
Danny Reyes moved Canadian across
the 50-yard line on the opening drive with a
26-yard run. Reyes capped the drive with a
1-yard score. Weaver added his first touch-
down, a 12-yard run, on Canadian's next pos-
session. Weaver caught a 30-yard pass on the
drive, moving the Cats nto Greyhound ter-
ritory.
After two punts and turning the ball over
on downs, Gruver moved into Wildcat terri-
tory late in the first quarter. The Greyhounds
were turned away when Weaver intercepted
a tipped pass and returned it 70-yards, giving
Canadian a 19-0 first quarter lead.
Gruver got on the scoreboard early in the
second quarter with a field goal. Canadian
answered with a 12-yard pass from Brandon
Robinson to Clint Cockrell and a 4-yard run
by Weaver. The Wildcats held a 33-3 halftime
advantage.
Gruver scored on a 7-yard pass play on its
opening drive of the second half. The Hounds
went 68-yards on 8 plays, cutting the lead to
33-10. Alex Reyes caught two touchdowns in
the third period and Weaver added his final
touchdown of the game, giving the Cats a 53-
10 advantage heading into the fourth quar-
ter.
Gruver added two scores in the final pe-
riod and Braden Hudson connected with
Brennan Jordan on a 30-yard touchdown for
Canadi an's only touchdown of the quarter.
Canadian eclipsed the 60-point mark for
the third time this year and has scored over
50 points six times. The Cats averaged 47.8
points and 462 yards of offense per game
through the regular season. The only time
Canadian was held below 40 points was in the
17-7 loss to Stratford.
Lynch is happy with the way his offense
has performed, but says it needs to maintain
that level and continue to get better. "I think
the thing we have to pursue from here on out
is great consistency/- he said. "If you reflect
back to last year, we made improvement ev-
ery week, even once the playoffs started."
Robinson completed 9-of-21 passes for 118
yards and two touchdowns in the victory and
finishes the regular season completing 61% of
his passes for 2,397 and 28 touchdowns. Rob-
nson's grasp of the offense and his execution
in his first season has impressed Lynch.
"I think he is right where we want him to
be," Lynch said. "When he's got it going, he is
awesome. He's performed extremely well and
he knows the offense well."
The Wildcats averaged nearly 200 yards
of rushing per game and totaled 1974 though
their 10 regular season games. They featured
a triple-headed attack on the ground led by
Clay Cockrell's 618 yards and 10 touchdowns
on 68 carries. Weaver is second on the team
with 517 yards and 9 rushing touchdowns on
51 carries. Danny Reyes has added 255 yards
and six scores on 38 carries.
Lynch says having the three-headed
ground attack has many benefits. "I think the
biggest thing is it keeps everybody fresh," he
said. "That makes a real difference for us
We have been blessed with a lot of guys that
can make plays. The other key component is
we have guys that buy into the team concept.
They are not worried about stats and are more
concerned about how the team is doing."
Canadian allowed a season-high in points
versus the Greyhounds, but Gruver only man-
aged 10 points versus the Wildcats first team
defense. Opponents averaged 12.6 points ver-
sus this year and 193.6 yards of total offense,
Canadian recorded one shutout (Shamrock)
and allowed 20 points or more only twice. The
defense forced 21 turnovers (12 interceptions
and 9 fumbles) and allowed opposing offenses
to complete on 43% of their passes.
Lynch thinks this year's defense could
be on the same level as previous seasons. "I
think it has the ability to be as good as any
defense we have ever had," he said. "There
are some spots we are stronger at and other
areas where we aren't as strong."
Senior Jed Rankin led the Wildcats with
108 tackles through the first ten games and
sophomore Ryan Alexander led with 9 sacks.
If Wellington beats Boys Ranch tomor-
row night at Dick Bivins Stadium, Canadian
will play the Rockets Friday, November 21
n Pampa at 7 p.m. A win by Boys Ranch will
place the Regional game n Canyon or Ama-
i 'Jo.
