Julie Cooke, Tomra Scroggins and Jaelynn Swires
Volunteers take Meals on Wheels to the next level
Two local restaurant owners are making
plans to expand the Meals on Wheels pro-
gram to include weekend deliveries and are
seeking help from the community.
Julie Cooke of the Cattle Exchange and
Tamra Scroggins of Our Fill in* Station have
joined forces to extend the service to week-
ends, something that has been provided
by volunteer Jaelynn Swires for about two
years.
Swires began her one-person crusade
after she discovered a weekday Meals 011
Wheels recipient who had fallen n his back-
yard and remained there for two days. "I
started it because of him," she said. "Besides
Meals on Wheels, there was no one to check on
him." Swires said she also thought to herself,
"Meals on Wheels is great, but are they not
supposed to eat on Saturday and Sunday?"
Swires began preparing and deliver -
ng meals on Saturdays. Then on Sundays,
through a donation by Cattle Exchange
owner Milton Cooke, she picked up prepared
plates from the restaurant for delivery to her
route that included up to 17 recipients at one
point and currently around seven. She often
used the kitchen at The River Church and the
members contributed money for food, even-
tually earmarking money from the collection
plate for the cause and allowing Swires to
charge groceries to the church's account.
Julie Cooke, who delivers meals on the
weekday route, offered to assist Swires on
the weekends. After a couple of months Cooke
told her, "This is just too much for you." She
made a proposal for more nvolvement from
the community and talked to Tamra Scrog-
gins about the possibility of pooling resources.
They then approached the weekday Meals 011
Wheels coordinator Sandy Waterfield about
the idea as an option for MOW participants to
receive weekend meals at no charge to them.
This week, You Dough Girls nformed Cooke
that they will provide free rolls on Sundays.
The two restaurants plan to work togeth-
er in developing a menu
each month as well as a
delivery schedule. The
meals will be picked
up by volunteers at the
designated restaurant
each Saturday and
Sunday at 2 p.m., with
expected delivery time
between 2 and 3 p.m.
"It's a way of giv-
ing back," said Cooke.
"Jaelynn has done a re-
markable job ;n getting
a weekend meal ser-
vice started. We would
like the opportunity to
enhance her project."
She and Scroggins also
hope that families get
nvolved in delivering the meals. Their goal is
to start by this Saturday, November 15.
