Little House building fund passes halfway mark
as campaign progresses toward $1.3 million goal
The campaign to build a new Rachel's I ttle
House daycare center continues, with contri -
butions having surpassed the halfway mark
on the wTay to a $1.3 million goal. Little House
board members are looking for a "helping
hand," hoping to raise enough money to begin
construction early next year so that they can
continue to meet the day care and after-school
needs of this growing community.
The Little House is bursting at the seams in
ts present location, having more than reached
ts capacity with the closing last summer of
the YMCA's day care program. It is the only
licensed day care facility in a community which
has no licensed babysitting services.
While the number of day care fac i li ties here
has been cut in half, the demand for those ser-
vices continues to grow. Li ttle House adminis-
trator Dana Koch said the day care center has
maxed out its capacity, has had a waiting list of
14 families since August, and receives calls ev-
ery day from those seeking day care services.
That does not nclude the demand for infant
care which was significant enough when Little
House representatives polled the community
six months ago that accommodations for new-
borns were included in the new design.
Plans have been nked for the new facility,
and were released to The Record by Amarillo
Architect George Pendergraft this wTeek [see ac-
companying graphics]. As designed, the spacious
new day care center will increase capacity from
68 children aged 18 months to 12 years, to 98 eh 1-
dren from infants to 12 years. The plans include
separate classrooms and bathrooms for children
n each of four age groups—ages 12-24 months,
24-36 months, 3 year olds, and 4-5 year olds—and
two additional bathrooms. The proposed facility
would also offer space for infant care—an addi-
tion to the Little House program for which there
is great demand from working families.
The design also includes a full-size kitchen,
laundry, activity and dining room, conference
and training room, and office space for the
staff, as well as a covered off-street driveway
and off-street parking for safe delivery and
pickup of children.
According to Koch, the greatest benefit the
proposed facility offers is space. Although the
Little House is operating within its legal lim-
its, she said, "The more kids you get in a room
together, especially younger ones, the more
fighting and aggression you will see."
"You need smaller groups," Koch said.
"They need more separation. Our toddler
room can have 14, but when you get 14 children
18 months to 3 years old ...it's like they're fight-
ing for space."
As planned, the new day care center will not
only have separate classrooms for each group,
but it will also have separate playground areas,
alleviating the problem of older chi ldren gang-
ng up on younger ones.
The Little House is housed in a century-old
home which has been remodeled and expand-
ed. It is located in a low-lying area that tends
to flood when there is heavy precipitation—a
problem aggravated by the fact that one class-
room is in the basement, and occasionally ex-
periences drainage problems. "We have lost
thousands of dollars of supplies due to rainwa-
ter backing up and overflowing into the base-
ment classroom," Koch said.
In addition, the 100-year-old building has
the same issues any building of its age has, n-
cluding old wiring and water pipes, as well as
some termite and water damage.
The building fund was established sev-
eral months ago, and has accumulated about
$800,000 n donations. Generous contributions
from both the Methodist and Presbyterian
churches have accounted for nearly half of that.
Board member Kelley Cameron said the
Little House has applied for grants from the
Meadows Foundation in Dallas, and from Tulsa's
Mabee Foundation, which helped fund comple-
tion of the YMCAwher it was built many years
ago. In addition, the Little House board is selling
raffle tickets for a beautiful full-size quilt hand-
made by Diane Norris. Tickets for that drawing,
which will be held Wednesday, November 26, are
on sale now for $l/each and 6 for $5.
Tax-deductible contributions can be made
directly to the Little House, or to the Little
House Building Fund, by mailing them to P.O.
