Lt. McCabe
Joins WAC
Det. Here
A small girl's talks with a
combat experienced paratrooper
were her first contact with mili
tary life.
Today her life is not so dra
matic as the one pictured in stories
to her as a child by a WW II
airborne trooper cousin but new
ly arrived WAC officer Caroline
M. McCabe believes she has
greater opportunities than the
average civilian woman her age
Recently assigned to GI as as
sistant personnel services officer
the 26 year-old second lieutenant
is on a four year leave of absence
from her job as a personnel
secretary for Proctor and Gam
ble Cincinnati Ohio.
Lt. McCabe enlisted in the
WAC Reserves in 1956 and joined
the Regular Army in 1959 to de
cirie if she prefers a military or
civilian career.
In comparing military duties to
her former job Lt. McCabe said
they are alike in many respects
but she doesn't feel that civilian
women have the opportunity to as
sume the responsibility for the
welfare and morale of so many
people and act as a leader and
supervisor.
Her new job concerns all acti
vities relating to morale welfare
and recreation of military person
nel. It entails Youth Community
Club Activities Special Services
and any questions concerning mili
tary personnel welfare and out
side activities.
When asked if she would advise
a woman of like background to
try the Army as a career she
stated that she would give both
advantages and disadvantages
and let the woman decide for her
self.

Men needing additional acad
emic credic for military advance
ment should take the college-level
General Educational Develop
ment test.
And the same is true of those
desiring to enroll in college upon
discharge from the service Fort
Hood education officials pointed
out this week.
The Army credits a an who
has successfully completed the
college battery with one year's col
lege of university study.
Although most colleges do
not recognize the test for sem
ester-hour credit toward grant
ing of a degree it is an ex
cellent measuring device for
determining individual capa
bilities at the first year col
lege level.
A man has much to gain and
nothing to lose by taking the test.
The college battery —consisting
of four tests—includes Correctness
and Effectiveness of Expression
Interpretation of reading material
in Social Studies Interpretation
of Reading Materials in Natural
Scence and Interpretation of
Literary Materials.
A maximum of four hours may
be taken to complete any test
within the battery. Most men re
quire about three hours for com
pletion.
The test is in no way a sub
stitute for college entrance exam
inations but scores are indica
tive of proficiency in academic
felds.
Available in the Army Edu
cation Center (Bldg. 212) the
tests may be taken Monday
through Friday from 0730 to
1115 a.m. and from 1230 to
4:15 p.m.
No prior paperwork or appoint
ment is necessary.
The one-year college test is the
only college level test offered by
the Army. The old two-year exam
ination (2CX) was discontinued
in 1954 and is now obsolete.
A new cycle of Preparatory
Education Classes is scheduled to
get underway in the Army Edu
cation Center on Monday August
22 at 1230.
The class not only leads to an
Eighth Grade Certificate but is
excellent preparation for those pre
faring for high school GED tests
review fr GED re-tests and for
those preparing for ACB re-tests.
Duration of the courses is
from six to fifteen weeks de
pending on grade level as
signment of individuals as in
dicated by Grade Achieve
ments Tests scores.
Classes meet daily —Monday
through Friday—from 1330 to
4:30 p.m.
Commanders desiring to enroll
personnel in this cycle of classes
in accordance with Circular 621-4
c paragraph 6 should submit
names on informal memo to Army
Education Center and direct per
sonnel to report on the starting
date.

made of a pair of 45-foot rubber
floats fastened solidly to steel
beams. The beams also serve to
lock vehicles in place once they're
aboard.
In keeping with modern Army's
emphasis on light-weight a huge
aluminum platform is used to
hold armored vehicles as they are
driven onto the bridge.
"With five rafts we're able
to transport a full division of
armored vehicles across ri

Franklin W. Edson command
ing officer of the company.
The company is equipped to as
semble 10 rafts which will span
141 feet. Under unusual condi
tions when cranes cannot be
used the assembly can be done
by hand. The normal time re
quired for the job is a little more
than an hour and a half.
Another specialized piece of
equipment used by the engineers
is the Armored Vehicle Launched
Bridge (AVLB). This bridge is

stripped-down tank. Attached to
the front are hydraulic cylinders

The 16th Engineers have a
bridge platoon three line pla
toons and a headquarters

functions are: construc

Headquarters platoon is respon

combat conditions. They are

of water per hour and from the
time of arrival in a combat area
can supply an entire division with
fresh water within two hours.
Adding versatility to the com

Although their primary mission
is to provide engineer support for
the entire division the engineers
also are trained as infantrymen.
