"Yellow fever" in recent
years has carried a connotation
to the average man of a killing
or greatly disabling disease
found mostly in the tropical
areas of this hemisphere and
yet the Aedes aegypti (yellow
fever-carrying mosquito) was
found at Fort Sam Houston and
in San Antonio last year ac
cording to Capt. Ronald W. In-
termill.
Captain Intermill is the Four
th U. S. Army Medical Labora
tory project officer in the joint
U.S. Army U.S. Public Health
Service project to eradicate
completely the yellow fever mos
quito in Arkansas Louisiana
and Texas by 1970.
"The insidious thing about the
aegypti" he says "is that it
will breed inside buildings as
well as outside. It normally re
mains within a quarter of a
mile of its breeding site and the
female's choice of food is hu
man blood. The species is not
attracted to light so light traps
for survey or control are of no
value."
Captain Intermill heads a
team of enlisted preventive
dicine specialists who will have
a survey indoctrination at Fort
Sam Houston May 2-6 and be
gin a five month inspection
which will take them to Army
installations in the Fourth Army
area.
In a spot check of quarters
and office areas on the Army
posts the team will inspect such
things as evaporative coolers
aquariums flower vases or ivy
growing in water inside the
buildings and outside their at
tention will be focused on tin
cans automobile tires house
gutters or other things that
will hold water.
is pa a os it
breeds in artificial containers
rather than the usual standing
or stagnant pool of water"
Captain Intermill points out.
"The female lays her eggs just
above the waterline and the
eggs hatch when water is add
ed. While the usual incubation
period is 8-12 days the eggs
can lie dormant for a couple of
years and then hatch. For this
reason we try to attack the
weakest link in the life cycle
the breeding area in this case.

The device is a new sighting
instrument which insures near
perfect accuracy with the tank's
top mounted .500 calibre ma
chine gun.
Previously the tankers had
sighted this gun with the naked
eye which was impractical at
night. Further alignment be
tween the gun's sight and bore
particularly during elevation
was imperfect.
With the new fixture the ma
chine gun is now aimed opti
cally using a system of peris
copes light beam splitters mir
rors and infra-red light beams.
Tankers can insure perfect syn
chronization of gun and sight by
simply aligning two converging
light beams.

Special crews will be taught
the use of plotting boards and

Learning how to "lay" the
