Both Yarborough and Poage

In the armor units of Old

is the result of sending trained
personnel to the ranges.
The 1st Bn. 13th Armor 1st

Preliminary training for the
men of the 13th Horse started
several weeks ago and will
culminate in a test of their
knowledge of maintenance
operation and safety next week.
The test is conducted using
the M-48 A1 tanks on which the
unit trains. At each station of
the test is a combat ready (ex

which some area of the tankers'
knowledge is tested by actual

D. Ashby and his staff. Col.
Ashby led the senator on a brief
tour of the hospital. Yarborough
visited more than a dozen Viet
nam returnees. He chatted with
them asking where they lived
and how they were injured.
Upon encountering one victim
of a traffic accident Sen.
Yarborough reeled off the 1965
statistics on traffic mishaps
(53000 fatalities and 2 million
injuries).
One Vietnam returnee Sgt.
William J. Crow of Chandler

with a newspaper clipping from

The senator asked Crow his unit
and how he was wounded.
Another returnee Sp4 Jesse

Yarborough a question many

"Are you going to be our next
governor senator?"
The senator replied "I want
to serve the people of Texas but
I would hate to give up my
seniority in the Senate. My
choice is like General Lee's. He
had to choose between serving
the nation and serving his
state."

Seat Belts

A 17-year-old girl was killed
when her car was rammed from
behind. The steering wheel
crushed her chest and punctured
her lungs. She was going only 30
and was a mile from her home.
Her seat belt: unfastened.
A Ft. Hood soldier died
recently while riding as a
passenger in a friend's car. He
was thrown from the car and
died when his head struck the
road. His friend who was wear
ing his seat belt was uninjured.
The driver had lost .control of
the car at 70 miles per hour.
These accidents emphasize
how effective seat belts can be.
In the first three accidents
none of the cars in the fatal ac
cident were traveling at ex
cessive speeds. None of them
were severely damaged. Yet
because seat belts were not
or re
neccessarily lost their lives. In
the last accident the driver was
speeding but because he was
wearing his seat belt he lived
through the grim experience to
face charges of negligence in
court.
The accidents also point up
another interesting fact about
traffic accidents. These ac
cidents typically all took place
occur within this radius yet
driver's home. The National
Safety Council has been saying
for years that most accidents
within a 25-mile radius

most people don't buckle their
safety belts until they start out
on a longer trip.
Statistically your chances of
being killed on a trip to the cor
ner grocery are greater than on
a trip across the country.
Ft. Hood is still sponsoring a
Buckle Up For Bucks program
to encourage drivers to wear
their seat belts. Drivers are
stopped at post gates and if they
are wearing their seat belts
they are awarded $10. If they
aren't wearing their belts they
are told they just missed the
windfall.
It would seem that financial
incentive is unnecessary when it
comes to protecting your own
life but for some reason the
tiny act of buckling a seat belt
seems too much of an effort for
too many people. The National
Safety Council and other safety
experts view the failure of some
many to fasten their belts as a
national tragedy. They know
that the belts work but they
also know that there will be
enough unbuckled belts this year
to kill more people than were
killed during the Vietnam War
last year.

IG Keeps Check
On Performance
In Many Fields
By SP4 BRYAN NOONAN
In every army there must be
an agency whose di'.ty it is to
make periodic inspections and
checks on the performance of
the army agencies in a specified
wide variety of fields.
This function in our Army is
performed by the Inspector
General and his organization.
The 2nd Armd. Div's office
of the Inspector General recent
ly joined with the rest of
his organization in observance of
the 190th anniversary of the
origination of the Inspector
General of the Army in 1777.
The office of the Inspector
General of the Army was
created by law in December of
that year by a resolution of the
Continental Congress.
Baron Von Steuben of the
Prussian Army and former aide
to Frederick the Great who had
come to America in 1777 to offer
his services to the Revolutionary
Forces was made Inspector
General the following year in the
rank of major general. He made
invaluable contributions to the
discipline tactics and general
efficiency of the Army.
I os on a
period the position of Inspector
General was perpetuated. One of
those holding it was Alexander
Hamilton who was appointed
when trouble with France seem
ed imminent in 1778.
Today the Inspector General
and his staff within the 2nd
Armd. Div. are confidential
agents of their respective com
manders. Their mission is to in
quire into and report upon mat
ters which pertain to performan
ce economy discipline and ef
ficiency of the division.
